SKS tips

You should be fine... Filing the magazines for proper fit is normal... I have an ATI stock, and the mags fit just fine... HOWEVER, the front of the mags were mashing into the receiver, so the firearm was no longer feeding correctly. Upon inspection of the magazines, I noticed an area that was being bitten by the receiver... A short blast with the dremmel on each mag made for a perfect fit, with only 1 jam so far (caused when the round got stuck between the Wartak and the receiver).

After you clean it, and smash some solvent and lube in there you should be 100% ready to rock. The most important thing is to take a look at the bolt, and give'r a good shake. If you here a rattling around, the firing pin is moving freely. If it's not, finger the firing pin from the rear, and if it feels springy and goes back to the full aft position it means he has a spring loaded firing pin installed (safety bonus x10).

Sorry for the innuendos... I can't help myself when it comes to these beautiful little firearms.

check out the w*w.sevensixtwosystems.com mag release system for the sks I have one and it works flawlessly cheers

I have an sks and love shooting the s### out of it with cheap ammo. Don't bother getting too picky about the Tapco Mag. Dremel what you must and here is a pic to make your tapco mag run smooth with stripper clips. Needs a little dremel on the feed lips to engage the stripper clips and prevent jamming while loading. Get it to fit and forget it. You will still have the "tacticool" look. The Ruskies designed this thing for stripper clips so the grunts would not lose the magazines. The magazines were never made to be easily removed from the receiver. Stripper clips are just as fast or in this case faster to load. I added a piece of plastic 1/4 ice maker tube to the remaining half of the stripper clip to make it easy to handle. Electrical tape holds it in place and keeps the top edge from snagging.
They fit multiples nicely into a magazine pouch for an M4 or the shirt pocket of your favorite hillbilly dinner jacket.

Agree with the many posters here - get an original mag put back on it - we are limited to 5 rounds anyway so it will just get in the way and add weight - honestly. Stripper clips are pretty neat and very fast once you get the hang of it (in about 10 minutes max). The after market stocks are fine but tbh - the original mag is the best mag. I have 4 of the suckers... err i did until the horrible boating accident...

My experience with the lovely SKS platform:

SKS magazine wont snap into place nicely? You're not hitting it hard enough.

Gas tube is tough getting back installed? You're not hitting it hard enough.

Trigger group won't seat easily? You're not hitting it hard enough.

Unable to chop down tree with rifle? You're not hitting it hard enough.

For what its worth, and there are a million you tube videos on cleaning out cosmoline, i used mineral spirits on 3 SKS's and it worked great. just remember to get everywhere including the inside of the bolt around the firing pin. I was paranoid so changed out all 3 firing pins to spring loaded versions but don't think its necessary if everything is cleaned well on a regular basis.

In Soviet Russia, as you well know, rifle hits you hard.

For sure Chas - near boiling water will take all the cosmo off with some elbow grease and an old toothbrush. After that I fine clean with civilian clp until I am happy followed by a lightly oiled rag. My .05 cents as .02 is zero or...

Metal parts only! Wood is better to take out and sweat wrapped in a towel with newspaper in the spaces then into a black plastic bag and onto the dash. Its better to check and refresh the packing material when you can. It will not hurt if you do not clean every couple hours or so, but diligence takes out more cosmo.
