Sako L579, general gist?

Hi guys, im contemplating a new rifle in a calibre I have thought as most useful to me, I would sell the Remington 700 .270, and go down this Sako route.

What is the general gist with this model of Sako?

it is a rebarrelled job by a well known gunsmith, so no qualms there, brass and dies with the sale.. also a k6 weaver ontop now. asked for deal without scope.


anywho, what would the weight be roughly of this rifle?
are aftermarket synthetics available?


price is on par with the L579 I see around, plus the odd dies ..

I shot my first big game animal with my father's L57, the predecessor to the L579. That rifle came to me from my father and I have subsequently passed it on to my nephew. It is a nice rifle. From the research I have done the L57/L579 are fine rifles and considered slightly better than the 591 series that followed. Lore has it that the workmanship on the 579 series was slightly better and they had a better trigger. From memory I would say it will be slightly lighter than your M700, but I could be wrong, especially if it was rebarreled with a heavier contour tube. As far as aftermarket synthetics go I would think you would have a really difficult time finding one as they were produced from 1957-92. For the most part before synthetics were popular. If wouldn't hesitate to pick up another, should one come up in a calibre I was looking for.

WL......the L579 is a very high quality rifle and you would never be wrong investing in one. What caliber by the way, you didn't say. It will be a touch heavier than your Rem, as Sako used a slightly heavier contour barrel and a much better quality wood (heavier) in their stocks. Brown Precision makes fiberglass and Kevlar stocks for the short action Sakos.

I used to have a l579 varmint in .308, and I wish I still did. I can't compare weight, but having a Sako is just special. The fit, finish and workmanship are beyond compare. It will always have a special place in your heart (sappy but true) I sold mine in 1993 for $600. That same year I bought a really nice Long Branch No. 4 MkI* for $190 so if the inflation is comparable....
What caliber is it?

They are an excellent quality all steel rifle. Except for the stock of course. I had a varmint which I should have hung on to. I would guess they are similar in weight, perhaps a little heavier, to a win. m70 or rem 700 of the same era. I did prefer the looks of the bolt shroud and the palm swell stock of my latter AIV

it has indeed been rebarrelled, so without knowing the contour I am not of much help with the weight .

it is barrelled in a .27-08, that's what tickles my fancy the most, apparently built 20 yr ago an hasn't been shot much..

so they say lol.


will investigate further.

does anyknoe know if synthetic stocks are available? not sure id rush into it, wouldn't mind bangin the wood one up in fair use..

I had the same rifle in a 243, and it was the proverbial tack driver. loved taking it to the range. FS

it has indeed been rebarrelled, so without knowing the contour I am not of much help with the weight .
