any weatherby backcountry s2 reviews?

Don't have the s2 but do have the non Cera coated model. Shoots incredibly well. The weight savings vs the standard model is significant. The trigger in the s2 is much better. Price is comparable to the competition. Awesome rifles IMHO
 
I have many standard S2 rifles and they are all shooters! I have my 4th original backcountry on its way to me right now. The only issue with the originals is the trigger is really bad or ok. Haven't had a great one yet. I changed my 257 to an aftermarket one and it made a huge difference. I love. The weight savings and the rifle seems better built than a standard model. I'm not sure about the ceramic coating, but I'm sure it will be fine.
 
If I had the knack for something real lightweight again I'd just buy a Kimber Montana. You'll be money ahead and happier with yourself than if you rebarreled/re-stocked a T3. I can't see making a Howa/Vanguard into a real lightweight rifle. There good, just can't expect them to be something they are not cutout for.
 
I picked up a new s2 backcountry in 300wm,
First - I really like the appearance of the rifle and the fit and finish looks good to me
I topped it with talleys and a vx2 3-9x40LR scope, its a reasonably lite package for packing all day long at under 8 lbs
Yes the stock is a bit on the "thick"side but acceptable
One thing I don't care for is the trigger and safety
the safety is just a piece of pressed metal that feels flimsy and cheap
the trigger is two stage which I don't mind but there is a tiny amount of creep before it breaks , could be tuned but
I have already ordered a timney with safety lever more like a rem 700 to take care of this

Accurate yes! very

But it kicks worse than any gun ive ever fired including my rem 700 338wm or 12ga with 3' slugs.
It is uncomfortable to the point of not wanting to shoot it much more than just to sight it in.
Not sure what to do about this, perhaps there is a better recoil pad available. ?

I think if someone had the same rifle in 30-06 that wanted to swap for mine I would probably go for it lol

Every Vanguard I have had was excellent for accuracy right out of the box regardless of the chambering.
One interesting thing that I couldn't help but notice is the price difference between a standard Vanguard S2 and a Range Certified Vanguard ... The retail price virtually doubles...why ? Just for that simple piece of paper indicating that it's an accurate rifle, sorry doubling a selling price for that is a bit much...
 
I haven't shot a Back Country but have handled one. I liked it. Handled well and it was certainly lighter than the regular S2. If your goal is a lighter Howa/Weatherby I'd be looking at the Alpine.

However I think it's hard to beat what you get for the money with a regular Vanguard S2.
