question to CGN'ers in ON. Is it a requirement that you have a gun club membership to receive the transfer of a restricted handgun.

My buddy wants to buy a pistol but is worried that he needs a membership. The good clubs here have wait lists for new members. Would drop in at ranges count? He knows that the rules will change Sep 2... But is is it a requirement to have an annual membership?

Any help would be appreciated...

Shazam.

Currently, you can purchase a restricted firearm without a club membership. I just told them the club I was planning on joining and had no issues for my first. If your friend can wait a bit he may be able to take the restricted firearm home like you would a non-restricted.

The transfer itself still would have to be approved which in Ont. can take from one hour to a few weeks. You just shouldn't need an att when approval does come thru

There is nothing in Canadian law that states a gun club membership is a requirement for purchasing a restricted firearm; however, I have run into gun shops that want to know what range you are a member of when you purchase one. Tell your buddy to just be straight up with the shop. If they have an issue with it tell them to show where the law states it's required. They wont be able to find it. But in the end it'll be up to the store if they're going to sell it.

retail stores in ontario do ask which club you are a member of but i purchased my first pistol without a membership. shortly after that (i still did not have a membership yet) my dad transferred his revolver to me and the CFC asked me which club i was a member of and i said i was not a member yet so the lady asked me if i plan on joining a club so i said yes and she said thats good enough. your friend shouldnt have any problems.

In Ontario (if not Canada), residents can only have restricted firearms for 1 of 2 reasons/purposes, a) you are a "target shooter" and therefore a club member (or your "intent" is to fall into this category) or b) you are a "collector" (do not belong to a club. {because who would shoot collectible guns?})

In any event, short story is he can have them but he will HAVE to answer in the affirmative to either a or b above with the CFO prior to taking transfer of ownership.

There is a rare purpose "c" of authorized carry of course, but unless the mob has made real threats regarding your buddies life it's not an option for him. Laugh2

I was told,(and this was a few years ago mind you) that when asked about a club membership that you could say I am planning to join such and such a club as soon as an opening is available, and that was acceptable, but that may have changed

I've bought 2 handguns without being a member of a range and without being asked if i was going to join a range in Ontario. However the time for the transfers varied widely between the two. The first was a couple hours, the second was like two weeks and a call from the rcmp that had me verify some info but that could have been due to an error on the store rather than myself.

He might as well join a club since the only place he can legally load or discharge the pistol is at an approved range. Also supporting clubs/ranges is one of the most important things we as gun owners can do.

Im in the same situation. Can anyone recommend a good place to purchase my first handgun, in store or online ??? I live just outside Toronto. Thanks

it's just like buying anything else. you have to shop around for the deals, especially right now canandian dollar is so low. I am in Toronto too and got my first one online from p-d-ent, a site sponsor @ Alberta. Then the most recent purchase, a cz75 sp-01 tactical, was from Silverdale because luckily I found the last one with old stock pricing there. Constant window shopping is the secret. :)

You can buy a restricted but since you can't do anything with it, you have to join a club. Drop-in won't cut it because the club has to send in your ATT application. When Sept. 2 rolls around you'll STILL need a membership unless you're about to renew your RPAL. Until you renew the conditions of transport are not attached to your license, and you still need an ATT.

Some of the clubs that are excepting members neat T.O. are Caliber (at Target Sports Canada) and Aurora Gun Club (Make sure you get the Canadian and not the American club).

I have been shooting about a year now since I got my RPAL, when I first got my RPAL in the mail I wanted to buy a gun online but all the online stores had a slot for gun club in the checkout. I was not a member of a club yet, but just like you it seemed like I needed to be to buy a gun.

So I called around, a local gun range in Stouville that also has a gun store called Target Sports, I asked them if I need to be a member to by a gun. They said "NO we can sell you a gun you will get a temp ATT to bring the gun home, then when you join a range you will get a long term ATT to be able to then bring the gun to your range or other approved ranges"

So I drove there the next day, bought a gun, shot a gun, and signed up for a range membership. 3 days later they called me saying my temp ATT came in, and I could take the gun home. 2 months after that I had my range class and range test shoots, and then 2 weeks after that they got me my long term ATT which states I can take any of my guns I own to my range or any approved range in Ontario.

The cool part was since they have quite a few range guns there, I was able to shoot the same brand and model of pistol I bought before buying it. I wuld have bought it anyways but still it was great to knock all 3 things off my list on one trip. It was the first time I had ever shot a real gun, and I shot one, bought one, and joined the range all in one trip!
