Hello everyone,

After long deliberation, I decided to get on the AR bandwagon. I ordered myself a Aero Precision lower, and I am looking for a recommendation on a complete upper with BCG.

I was envisioning the following:
- 14-16" barrel
- 1:9 barrel twist ( bulk ammo seens to be mostly 55 grain)
- forward assist and dust cover if possible. I just like them.
- not looking for super long range shooting, maybe up to 300" yards accurately.

My budget would be $600-700. I have read the reviews on the DA C8 upper, and I was leaning towards that, but I would like some input on what else would be available. I saw that Irunguns has a Core 15 16" Scout, and would probably come within my price range at my door, but it has a 1:7 twist rate as far as I can tell.

Thank you.

You won't go wrong with a Daniel defense upper, although the dollar difference is beginning to have it's effect

vltor upper
noveske barrel
sold at armtac
kac or bcm handguard sold all over the place, ill probably sell a bcm kmr 13 in a few weeks
dd or colt bcg
raptor or bcm handle

build your own, youll get a better barrel

Unfortunatey with a budget $600 -$700 and an exchange rate of 76 cents US, you are not going to get much of anything other than something used,NEA or Norinco. if you come up with another couple hundred dollar Armseast has the exact Stag upper in that price range.

Colt Canada 15.7" IRU upper reciever $999
Just stop drinking for a few months to make up the budget difference :)

As others have said, I think you need to up your budget to $1k or so to get quality. The IURs are nice, but you need specialized tools to do barrel changes, and will require a smith. That may be a factor depending on how much you shoot. The throat on even the best barrel will wear after enough rounds. My primary last 5-6 years, but I shoot a fair bit.

Adding to the 'build your own' theme:
If you are going with a parts kit and barrel, save your money on the boutique stuff like Vltor, Noveske and raptor charging handle - it will only cost you more for no appreciable difference. If you want a match grade barrel, get a pre-chambered unit from one of the well known barrel makers with a reputation for accuracy (Noveske is overpriced).

Being what our dollar is these days though, it is unlikely you can build for the price of a pre-made upper.
I'd look at BCM, or maybe some of what IRG can bring in from PSA or the like - bare bones, but well made with proper parts.

Also, don't shy away from a 7" twist - it is going to get on with 55 grain bullets just fine.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. Beltfed, i am getting the same feeling that a complete upper instead of piecing parts together will be the best value, especially with our dollar the way it is. IRG has a Core 15 Scout upper, with what i believe is a 1:7 twist rate for $350 US. I may take a closer look at that one. I am fine with a bare bone AR upper. I just want something that works reliably and has a good barrel life. Of course, the Colt would be a no brainer, but I don't have the extra cash.

They have some decent deals on Stags too - complete guns that is.
Another option is to keep your eyes peeled for a deal in the EE.
It seems lots of guys buy the latest fad then sell last year's trend that is now passé.

The CORE are solid entry level ARs... Your lead from IRG would come in under budget and would be good quality. Check if you need a BCG...

Btw: 1/7 is fine for 55 gr... My barrel is 1/7 and 55gr is almost all I shoot. It's heavier bullets (eg: 69 or 77) that have trouble in 1/9 or less.

Hey guys, i read that the DA/Norinco barrels are usually good for about 12000 rounds. Anyone have an idea what round count the Core 15 Scout 16" upper barrel is rate for on IRG? I believe the specs say that it is not chrome lined. Would that affect on barrel life?

Check with select shooting supplies. Dean has an STI upper with bcg and a leupold scope on consignment. Nice setup for the money

I'd SERIOUSLY be looking at the EE - lots of good deals to be found there, if you're patient and don't mind wading through the overpriced ones. Save the taxes, and support another gun addict with money to buy different stuff in the process!

For example:

Or

Maybe a bit out of your proce range, especially the Colt, but both uppers I'd be happy to own!

Hey CobraGT, I checked out EE, and I was surprised to see how many colts are listed. I'll check what else is there.

Rdavidson, thank you for your info on barrel life.
