In lalaland, that is Ottawa.
I've posted on the Bug-assault gun but several days ago, someplace, perhaps youtube, saw a piece of very fine wire mesh (from a coffee filter) cut, placed in the open breach to allow the rifle to #### and close. A small pinch of salt down the barrel, much more powerful than the Bug assault shotties.

Anybody any idea where I saw it?

The video that I saw was very explicit, the amount of salt by weight was probably about the weight of a pellet. The video shows the rifle being recharged a number of times and fired at the same target and very soon totally destroyed.

I think that I have enough in my memory bank that I can replicate this. The rifle that I have is a standard break action .177 that I don't want to ruin. My buddy, louthepou ( I love LEs!) warned in this forum of the agony he suffered when he took the works of a similar rifle apart, Louis being Louis finally got it back but warned about it.

So next week will be the test and I shall report back.

My trying to shoot salt, part 2

My rifle is a venerable Slavia, model 618.

I so far have not seen the DIY way to temporarily shoot salt a la Bug-A-Salt, but yesterday, I cut a piece of the very thin mesh from a coffee filter. M

My problem was that the mesh would notremain in place when recocking.Bt Ii did take
4 shots with considerably moresalt than the BAS shnotty. It worked very well.

So I am still searching for the article. A well, the same site had a DIY on how to disconnect the safety on a BAS which I want to do.

The concern expressed in the first post after my OP is no problem.
 
I bought a Bug A Salt 2 and it works great, was worth the money to me, I use it all the time when out on the deck especially when BBQing, way easier and faster then muzzle loading a break barrel every shot.

But I'm all for innovation, so what if you used a dab of hot glue to hold the exposed flap of screen to the outer barrel while using it for salt mode? If I watched the same mod video as you, he left a flap of screen outside the barrel and folded it over, hot glue shouldn't be permanent on the steel.

Confession :redface: I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer however know that there are some on CGN who are great.

BTW, the first one above which gets rid of the automatic safety set every time the BUG-A-SALT is pumped looks too challenging for me although I would love to do the modification.

I am now confident that I can do the simple job on my Slavia.

Since posting this message earlier, now after 1 pm EDT, I have my Slavia working as Chris Notap described on youtube :d and if I can just get my salt dry enough in this humid weather here in the upper Gatineau Valley, bugs, look out!

Using salt in my .177 rifk

I have now had another try at shooting salt in the rifle.

The problem that I've encountered is that the coffee filter is made of extremely fine brass weave and is hard to cut to the correct size. Further more, this wire is so fine, it is very easy to have a short clipping enter a finger which if not felt on entering, makes its presence know until it is removed.

So when I get a chance, I shell try and fine an aluminium mesh one easier to cut and instal.

I took 3 or 4 shots today and am impressed with the effect, just PITA with the mesh.0
 
I do this in my old crossman 781. It's a smooth bore, so groups the salt very well. It's a (sort of) bolt action, so I open the bolt, stuff a clump of cotton from a qtip in the breech, dump a spent .22lr casing full of salt down the muzzle, aaaand splat!! Dead bugz.

Just use wads. You could use anything from cotton to felt to old dryer lint. Plus it's swab the salt out of the barrel as it goes down the pipe. Pick it up, fluff it a bit and re use it.

Well now, this is the answer for sure. :HR: No more fooling with the mesh and getting small pieces imbedded in my fingers.
