A bit of an exaggeration, but it sure seems that way...

I've made several attempts at tracking down some of the Sellier & Bellot 8x57 Mauser ammunition with no success. Everyone I've spoken with is sold out and no one seems to know when they will be getting more.

Does anyone have the S&B 8x57 ammo in stock, or know what's with the "shortage"?

Demand exceeds supply. 8mm Mauser can be tough to find in general. Demand isn't high enough for the big manufacturers to make it, but it's higher than the small manufacturers can keep up with.

AmmoSupply has PPU 8mm mauser FMJ. I get pretty good results with it, but I don't hunt with my k98 - it's just a range toy - so I don't need soft points.

8mm Mauser is pretty much reloader territory now. There just isn't that much of it kicking around.

Privi and S & B still make lots of it. And it's in canada most of the time. But sometimes they are out and you have to wait. It isn't 308.

There's still surplus to be had as well if you look.

Not a cartridge that sells often in Canada so importers only import a small amount at a time compared to more in demand (faster selling) ammo so as not to be caught with stock sitting on the shelf for extended periods (money losing situation for both importer and dealer).

Same thing happens with 7.65x53 and 6.5x52mm ammo. It will be more available if demand for it starts increasing, 45-70 ammo was almost declared obsolete and was very hard to get back in the 1960's and 70's until Marlin started making rifles for it again.

It is easier for us to get .303 than in a lot of other places in the world because we have more demand here for it as there are still a lot of people here still shooting it.

Go to Europe and you can get 8x57mm nearly everywhere as it is the 30-06 of European hunters and shooters.

It's just not that popular a round on this side of the Atlantic - at least here in Canada (not sure about the US).

My RC K98 doesn't get out of the safe much simply because I'm not willing to pay up to $30 per box of 20 rounds.

Why not Reload?

8mm Mauser ammo is also "loaded down" stateside because it underwent a diameter change and went from using a .318" diameter bullet to one using a .323" bullet. They do that JUST IN CASE someone decides to send a .323 down a .318" tube. This happened in around 1905. Pretty rare instance but none the less, that is the reason they are anemically loaded here. TOO MANY LAWYERS

Pick up some surplus. Reload some.... its easy to have ammo around even on a budget. Buy a box or 2 when you see it. Get a little stash going. I try to keep at least 1 box of factory ammo and components for each caliber.

I started reloading due to my Yugo m48 needing to be fed. Since then ive amassed a bit of 8mm surplus as well. From ####ty click-bang Iranian stuff to excellent Yugo sniper stuff. Kinda crept up but at latest count over two 50cal ammo cans full. And to think i started of by converting 30-06 and 270win cases to 8mm. What sucked about reloading was the cost and difficulty in finding .323 bullets to reload with.

Just bought a Czech M24. (or so the tag said). Found the Privi Partisan stuff locally at one shop in town. I plan on reloading for it later once I have enough brass. Ammo was at Calgary Shooting Centre.
