if you want 2900fps with the 140's without fussing with brass prep and have decent bore lift, 6.5 Swede.
The 6.5-284 is a bit too much case volume and can be a pain to tune. 140gr family of bullets thrive at 2900/2950fps node so going any faster really isn't beneficial which render this case too big.
If you want to form and have very long case life, 260AI or 6.5 Mystic. Throat long and reaching 6.5-284/6.5 Swede speeds is easy. This was my choice for my F Open rifles years ago.... see 6mmBR.com gun of the week #75 and my website for project info.
260Rem is a great all around choice but typically max out in the 2800/2850fps node.... not a bad thing as it alway extends bore life quite a bit.
Then you have the 6.5 Creedmoor. Brass is expensive but definitely a growing case in popularity. Can be formed as well from 22-250. Pretty much a 2800fps case.
Then there is the 6.5X47L. Very accurate, slowest of the bunch but works very well.
The range of accurate velocity from top to bottom is 100 to 150fps.. that's it. The difference is burning up to 50% more powder for that extra speed. Component cost for them all is very similar now.
die costs can range HUGE.
Single feeding vs mag feeding... that can also limit your choice especially in a LA Rem.
For a LR plinker, I would say 28" as nice min with 30" allowing smaller cases to thrive. If you want some portability for hunting, then go 26" and the 6.5 Swede - just measure the bolt face to ensure it will fit. Feeding the 6.5-284 can be a PITA to set up.
Set your end use goals... back it up to the gear that works best. Going the other way doesn't always prove productive.
