Marlin 989M2 question

Hi guys and gals

I got very lucky and was able to acquire an original rear sight for my 989 M2 . Only question I have is WHERE on the dovetail do I want to put it . I looked up many pics of them with the sight in place and some are mounted closer to the barrel while others are farther to the rear .
Is it just a case of taking it to the range and tuning it to get the right placement ?
Any help prior to going to the range with it would be appreciated .

When i first got my 989 the sight was loose and i also didn't know where to put it. So i tried out a few different positions. I didn't notice any change in accuracy. I now keep it all the way to the front so i can also accommodate a scope
 
Aesthetically, the 989M2 is supposed to copy the M1 Carbine. If you want to be a traditionalist, put the site on the receiver close to where the sight on the M1 Carbine is.

This. The longer sight radius will help accuracy when shooting irons. I have the Marlin 99M1 (tube fed instead of detach mag) it is basically the same rifle. You're a lucky guy to find a rear sight. Here in the states many of these guns are missing the original and pay almost as much for a replacement sight as they did for the gun.
 
Have not been on here for a while and just found this thread. I've got one of those and have the sight as far back as it will go, one reason it seems to stay put in that spot, don't know why. I am paranoid about losing that sight.
The rifle is a fantastic shooter, light and accurate. The tube feed version also looks great.
