I have always used your basic hunting optic and am very familiar with the 3x9x40 world of scopes.

My question is for the long range crowd. Researching seems to show me that scopes seem to fall in three general categories.

Uber high end. S&B, U.S. Optics, Nightforce. Etc ...

Mid range, Sightron, high end Bushnell, Leopoldo, vortex etc ....

Econo scopes


My question is which would be the best choice in the mid range. $1000 to $1500 range for a long range optic.

There is no "best" for anything, there is only compromise. Buy the optic with the features you need for the role you intend to use it for that fits your budget.. Or save your money and buy a known entity like the brands you list as "uber high end".

I would like to shoot out to perhaps 700 to 800 yards. Nothing intense just some plinking at paper and perhaps the odd pumpkin. An optic that holds zero adjusts predictably and of course helps s my old eyes see clearly.

Plink how? What level of precision are you expecting or working towards? Will you be running premium match grade ammo? We need a lot more detail before we can offer a suggestion that would be appropriate. Selecting optics is a complex and often difficult task.

Sorry. Right now I have my hunting rifles set up so I can comfortably hit a gallon jug at the 500 yd stand at the range ( with no wind )

I would like to keep a minute of accuracy out to 800. The scope would be going on a dedicated long range rifle that would not be used for hunting. Money as always is an issue but I know darn well that a Tasco Varmint scope will not do the job. I've had the good fortune to try some U.S. Optics and Schmidt and Bender scopes but they are out of my price range. Hoping that some of the mid range brands I listed would provide comparable quality.

So you're looking for upper end performance with the MOA to 800 mark. Not sure what rifle or ammo you're using but your criteria are pushing you deep into the "expensive" setup section for the rifle, the ammo, and the optic.

I've had good success using the basic Bushnell 10x that everyone on the board has in their safe or closet. But if you're really wanting to shoot long range you'll end up at least wanting one of the Sightrons that Jerry sells or going whole hog for a S&B, Nightforce or USO.
