I helped a buddy pick out his first M14 the other day, they are on sale at the Canadian Tire in Bowmanville for $499.99, the first one we handled was in pretty nice shape, over all fit and finish seemed very good, barrel looked indexed right no real visible cant to left or right and the rear sights worked really well, but just to see what else was there we asked for to see another, everything on it was just the same as the last except for when i pulled the op rod back n let it go it reallllly pinged! I told him to take that one and we went back and tore it down. Another big plus was the flash suppressor was NOT welded on it was a bit stiff to come off as was the gas system. we cleaned it all up and greased it and put it back together there was no need to peen the gas system or flash suppressor as it we needed a rubber mallet to tap them into place, the gas system didnt time right, the first time so we just flipped it and it was hand tight at about 5:30.

We went to the range and put the rear sight up 10 clicks from the bottom and it was shooting dead on and straight at 50 yards with no failures at all, we tried out Barnaul ammo, Norc ammo, and Hirt ammo, all worked well but had the best accuracy out of the norc ammo.

Over all I am quite impressed with the rifle, the only thing he would really need to replace would be the op rod guide rod just to smooth out the action. Has anyone else got one of the recent norcs? any similar success storeys?

Sounds like you got a hell of a good deal there! Wish the CT out west would sell rifles period, only ever see airguns.

Hey, CJ... did you clean out the gas system like I teach all of you at my clinics:

2 drops of bore cleaner into the weep hole nearby the front band... and then load up a magazine of five only discovering the enemy in the wire? :)

Cheers and congrats on that great find....

Over the last 5 years the remaining CT in Toronto have not only stopped selling firearms but now ammo. You're lucky to find them in the GTA unless you travel 2 hours north. (Strange they still sell BB/pellet guns along with paintball guns when people still shoot them illegally in the city.) For $499 I'd consider buy a second one!

I guess it depends on what you consider the "GTA". Milton CT carries and sells, there may be one in Brampton as well. Georgetown (but that is a bit far out - but not 2 hours). Have to stop in at Bowmanville next time going by ...

it's where you are- all Canadian tires are franchises and it's up to the OWNER and the sporting department head as to whether they'll handle guns or not- the smaller ones just CHOOSE not to- Calgary,( certain stores) Edmonton, and most of the larger centres do

Oakville canadian tire sells ammo
I'm sure it does. So does Fenelon Falls and Lindsay but it's still a 90 minute drive and I have reasons to go to those places. I have no reason to go to Oakville.
My point was that the CT's in Toronto no longer carried firearms or ammo and it's a pi$$ off. I even tried one or two Walmarts to see if they had any but was told they stopped carrying as well. Toronto chased out dealers years ago and now we only have one or two stores left now that the big chains are bowing to media hype.

But I will be checking to see if any up north carry M305's now.

Nice... Shorty or standard barrel? I'm starting to think I need to add a standard barrel to my little family...
