How tough is this bullet ( .450 Marlin ) would you use it for bears big or small ? Inside 50 yrds. Got a rifle and 10 box ammo would like to carry it but don't know much about the bullet, is it more for deer?

I've shot quite a few and I would say they're great for deer( maybe a little thin for elk, but still works fine) and have seen them drop a few black bears with authority BUT anything bigger and I'm with Boomer; heavy cast with a WFN.
 
Don't agree with Boomer on this one... in my .45/70's the .325 FTX proved to be the most accurate bullet I tried... and on stacks of wet news paper and pine, they stayed together and penetrated well... I did not shoot game with them, but based on what I saw, I would be confident using them on deer, black Bear, elk and moose... I would probably choose a heavier and tougher bullet for big bears or bison.

Hey Boomer I know that bear. I am waiting for my dies but want to carry this rifle now. I don't feel that I would be happy with this ammo for walking around. Looking for load data for the 420 or 480 too. I guess I will just have to shoot these 10 boxes to get the brass oh well.

If it is loaded factory Hornady ammo be aware that the brass is shorter than standard length to accommodate for the long FTX bullet. So if you reload them you will either be seating a heavy cast bullet further down into the case, eliminating space and raising pressures, or your dies may not be able to crimp brass that short unless they are Hornady "new dimension" dies.
Just a heads up.

My apologies, I knew this was about 450 Marlin but had a brain lapse for a second and was taking about 45-70. Starline does not make 450 Marlin brass.
 
But that's good to know the 450 Marlin stuff is full length.
Pounder, you should do a quick measurement of your brass and reference a manual to see if the factory stuff you have is full length or not.
 
The 350 grain factory is full length the FTX is short. If you get hornady new dimension dies or modify standard dies all you need to do is set to factory length and load. No loss of case volume.
