Might as well have a 7mm-08 not a 7mm Rem Mag!

Only getting 2700-2800 fps out of my 7mm Rem Mag with 160 Barnes TSX over 59.5 grains IMR4831 (1.5 grains over Barnes max recommended)

It would seem I'm shooting a belted "magnum" 7mm-08......hmmmm

Maybe Reloder 22 or continue to push the 4831 further. No signs of pressure yet

Mike

That is true. I've taken a black bear and two bucks with this load. I was just really surprised at the velocity when I finally shot it over a chrony. I'd rather a 22" 7mm-08 or the likes than a 26" 7 mag if that is all the horsepower I can get

26 inch barrel?? that could be your problem lol, a 26 inch barrel shot faster then my 30 inch barrel by 100 fps, same powder load. makes me wonder how much faster a 22 inch barrel would have been

I have loaded a fair bit of 7mm Rem mag 160 grain fodder, using IMR 4831.

I have yet to own a 7mm Mag that would not digest 63 or even 64 grains of IMR 4831 behind the 160 of any design.

I expect a 24" barrelled 7mm Mag to deliver 3000 or a bit more with the 160s.

I suggest that RL 22 or H4831 [also Norma MRP, H1000, RL25, Vihtavuori N165 or 560, or IMR 7828] will get the best velocities.

Regards, Dave.

powder is burnt up before the bullet is out of the barrel, the extra barrel length just adds to drag on the bullet reducing bullet speed, there is a point where a longer barrel will decrease bullet speed rather then add to it

Late in Jack O'Connor's career, he wrote an article on 7mm calibre rifles. He stated how many hundreds of game animals he had either shot, or seen shot, with the 7x57 Mauser and how many hundreds of game animals he had either shot, or seen shot, with the 7mm Remington Magnum, and he wrote that he couldn't see any difference in the killing power between the two calibres!
He said a good hit with either was a dead animal and a poor hit with either was a wounded animal.

So, you're saying a 24" 7Mag will be generally slower than a 22"?

So you folks are stating that a shorter barrel will produce higher velocity's in a in a magnum cartridge???

Could someone please explain this to me ???

I mean my 308 LTR with a 20" barrel produce's 300fps less than my 308 benchrest with a 30" barrel with the same load, brass, primer, powder & bullets.
My .300 WM's produce higher velocities with 28" barrels than it did with a 24" & 26" barrels. Once again same powder, brass, primer's & bullets.

Did I miss something ? I mean I don't take information out of book's ,internet or hear say as written in stone. I have done real world testing & I don't mean to start something but saying a shorter barrel produce's higher velocity's. Please explain this in detail ,,,you will be doing us long range guy's a huge favour. And also save me huge $$$ that I have spent over the year's especially on rifle barrel's.....And once again I'm not trying to offended anyone, just looking for some answer's to above comment's... And with low velocity with the 160gr pill in the 7mm rem mag. Perhaps you may want to try a different powder or a little higher charge . Watching for pressure sign's of course. How many round's down the tube ??? there are some factors there...

And with no disrespect to the late great Jack O'Conner or any of the 7x57 owner's out there, but comparing the 7 x 57 to the 7mm rem mag in regards to fps & ft-lbs of energy.
I mean come on guy's , not everyone is that naïve, or that un-educated in ballistics.

Thanks in advance.........

I can't see a 7mag slowing down In 30 inches of barrel.
The .223 is still gaining in a 24 inch and the .22 LR maxes velocity in about 13.5
Now I realize not all barrels are created equal but I'm not sold here

The only true way to make a determine how much velocity you would lose or gain is to take your 30" barrel and cut it down an inch or two at a time. No two barrels are the same, and even if the chambers were cut with the same reamer I doubt a fair comparison could be made.

Just read the specs on Tikka's sight. My barrel is actually 24 3/8"

If you are looking for a higher velocity with a 24 3/4" barrel in 7mm rm with a 160gr pill, maybe you want to consider IMR-4451.
Just a suggestion , but I bet you won't be disappointed. And if your set on running 160gr Barnes bullet, perhaps you could contact them & ask them what their load data is with the above mentioned powder & pressure's. I'm sure they have tested it by now. But speaking for myself I have seen increase in FPS & lower pressure's with that powder in a few a different calibers that I have tested. Another option would be to go with a lighter bullet...But i'm sure you have thought of that also...

But these is only a suggestion's........

Lots of factors involved try a different load .cronagraphs can supply a real wake up call just caus it barks and jumps more doesn't mean its going faster I have a 7stw that gives me 120fps more than my 7rem with a lot more recoil .I also have a 338 rum that shoots faster than 2 different lapuas that my friends have and its not over pressured.Take a dozen 3006s and 308s out and see what's faster
toss a 300win Bar in too that a buddy payed a fortune for and see the results.Kinda rough for him to see 90 fps faster than one of the308s.
