Like Trailering a Bike to Sturgis......

Unwinding after a 13hr shift and have been contemplating a very pretty rifle for my upcoming 50th.... The weirdest thought popped in as I struggled with how to actually hunt with it and not endanger it's finish or risk a ding.

Does anyone think that an individual would have made the shot with a working gun, downed the quarry and then carefully unpacked their gem of a rifle to pose with for the trophy shot?

Mine will get a few beauty marks I'm sure, gives it character... Been a tiring tour to have random thoughts like that making it in to ones head.

Just like trailering a bike to Sturges, be prepared to be ridiculed by the hardcore that biked the whole way. What wiuld it prove? Might as well have the guide shoot it for you too then, it's only a picture right?

It happens on different levels.

Was talking to a friend of a friend years ago, and he was bragging about the elk he shot with a rifle, and then posed his compound bow and arrows on the carcass so he could get credit in one of the bowhunting mags. I never saw the pics, and didn't know the guy that well, but it's not my cup of tea when your ethics are that lousy.

I can't be bothered to lug around a second "pretty" rifle to pull that stunt with. If I have a spare, it's just as scratched as the primary, if not, it's about to be.

It's been done for sure. I don't remember the exact details and I didn't see the articles but I know that a writer once took a Cape Buffalo with his bolt action, got the photos and had the article published. He also got photos taken with him and the same buff but with a fancy double rifle, wrote a different story and got the second story published in a different magazine. Presumably he thought no one would notice, they did notice.

I'm not sure if this is something you're considering doing from your post but I'd encourage you not to. A person is really only lying to themselves with this kind of nonsense. You'll take your pictures and show your friends but really beyond a few attaboys and ooos and aahs nobody really cares and for the most part this extends to antler size and record books too. Your friends are your friends regardless or what you shot or how you shot it and nobody else cares. To look at it a little differently though I do know a man who got caught by Boone and Crockett trying to cheat his way into the record book, not only did they deny him entry, they also erased a couple animals he already had in the books. Before this took place his having animals in the books didn't affect my opinion of him at all, but getting caught as a cheat sure did.

Finally, to quote Why not, "Not taking a rifle out hunting because it has lovely wood, fine checkering and well-executed metal work, is like refusing to marry and enjoy a gorgeous woman because she will get old and wrinkled." Buy the rifle you want, use it and enjoy it and don't worry. You don't need to abuse a gun to hunt with it and a little care goes a long way.

Just to be clear, I do ride my scoot from Kelowna to wherever and there is never a trailer involved just like I would hunt with this new rifle..... Just was musing if it was done or not ?!?

You learn to appreciate a fine rifle for what it is not just what it looks like... I'm still scared of putting a ding in the stock but it's been out every day since bear season opend... It's too big of an investment not to earn it's keep.

Funny story a family friend has a really nice double rifle and his house is full of hunting pictures and this rifle is everyone of them. I got a chance to actually look at the rifle and it's never been fired I finally got it out of him he uses a m70 for hunting then uses the double for pictures. You wouldn't think it would make a difference but now that I know the pictures on the walls just don't seem to have the same effect,it's not the rifle that makes the picture but defiantly takes the purity out of the picture when rifle is essential just a prop.

Never heard or thought of such a thing. Why would one do that - to lie to themselves? Then pose with a BB gun for all it matters.

Some people can take a pristine rifle into the woods for a week, hunt hard with it, and it comes out in the same condition. Other guys can just handle a rifle in a gun store and mark it up somehow.

Yes, by all means, use it as it should be used. Just be thoughtful and take care of it in the field.

I do love Sauers. Had a 200 in .308 for years but only hunt upland now, so it is gone. The new owner has a LNIB rifle that served me well for 15+ years. Take care of it, use it, and enjoy being able to have a nice rifle to hunt with.
