$500-$550 is about the going price for these at the big box stores, so $399 is definitely decent. It's a good action and better then the other budget guns....stock is on par with the other budget rifles.

I think Weatherby came up with a marketing idea that has somewhat backfired. Coming out with all these crazy camo patterns( blaze,kryptek,whitetail bonz etc) aimed at the "tactifool" crowd, they misjudged something. That crowd isn't after bolt action hunting rifles. All of a sudden, the big box stores have a glut of these sitting on the shelves.This has steadily driven the price down. Regardless, $399 is a smokin deal and no rifle in that price range can touch the Vanguard .personally, I don't think many under $800 can touch it either.

The recoil pad is fairly soft and there is a palm swell with the S2 stocks.
The S1's I don't recall having a palm swell?

It's dipped so I don't think so, not without chemicals that would probably dissolve the stock as well.

How resistant is this finish?

I picked one up in Kryptec grey and 308 in the spring. Was a great deal. It's currently awaiting first blood this season.

As stated not even in the same league. These Vanguards are a Howa 1500 action which is essentially a licenced clone of 1960s Sako L series actions.

I am surprised that the boys from Wildcat don't make a stock for these. There are certainly enough variations of this Howa action to justify a run of stocks imo. Mr Robertson , could be an opportunity here.

I recently picked up a take off vanguard sporter walnut stock to put on my Howa. Those plans have changed as it is now going on the one I just ordered.

If one of these $ 399.99 ugly rifles with its hideous stock manage a 0.338 " group out of the box who the Hell cares about the stock.

Should I get the 308 or the 30-06. I just want it for long range targets 500+meters. Thoughts? And in my area I still have the choice.
