I couldn't help myself, I have succumb to temptation.............There was another Sako Safari in 338 WM on the EE last week, and a Mod 700 Classic in 300 H&H the week before...............What was I to do, a man can only be so strong for so long, and then something has to give. I haven't purchased a firearm in months, many months!!!!!!!!!! The urge was uncontrollable, so I broke down and purchased both. I am ashamed of myself for being so weak, but I was so strong for so long. I do not however consider this an abject failure, just a stumble, a relapse, from which I shall recover and get back on my track of abstinence. Maybe I'll even sell a couple to appease my guilty conscience (read WIFE) and keep the herd from growing uncontrollably as it has so many times in the past..........

Now for the big question, what to do with that 338, as I have no use for a 338 but it's just not quite long enough for a good 340. SO, I have been pondering and think I have decided on a lengthened 340 Ruger. I shall lengthen the case to 2.70 and seeing as how I have to have a reamer built anyway I think I shall radius the shoulder as well. I have several hundred new W-W 375 H&H brass with which to make cases and several hundred more R-P as well. I have been using the R-P in my 375 H&H as well as my 375 Wby, and they have been working out fine there, so I'm thinking the W-W would be a perfect choice for this conversion. Of course making the cases to fireform is not an issue with the die sets I have, so no issue with cases or loading initially. My internal capacity calculations say that this should equal or even slightly exceed the capacity of the 340 Wby and should snuggle down and feed from this action and magazine without a glitch.

Questions or opinions ?

that sako safari is a classic rifle .i would just leave it .not to many of those around .
 
You can be forgiven for your transgression. It can happen even to the strongest willed. I speak from experience. Confession, however, is good for the soul and does ease one's conscience.
 
This is a consideration rar, alright, but I have an original in 375 H&H which I restocked in a gorgeous piece of walnut and it will remain untouched. Of course I kept the original stock, but the new one is a virtual clone to the old just a much nicer piece of wood. The only changes are a Rigby style forend tip and a Neidner skeleton grip cap.
With this 338 though, I need to do something about the anemic cartridge it comes in, so it's either do something in a .338 bore or go for a rebore. Having one in 375 kinda makes anything in the 35 or 9.3 class redundant and I have these calibers covered. Going up to a 416 is a possibility but I already have a Rigby in a 602 and 458s and 470, so no real need to go there either.
I want to keep the 5 rounds under capability of the magazine, so that precludes anything on the 404 case which leaves me with either the old belted case lengthened which is a good option but like I said it's not really long enough to go all the way to the 340 Wby. Or I can create my own case based on the .532 bolt face without using a belted case, like Ruger did. But I shall lengthen it to take full advantage of the action and magazine length and get the maximum ballistics I can in this bore size while adhering to the other design criteria I have set.
I don't believe these rifles have attained such an exclusive collector status that rechambering one falls under "Cardinal Sin" yet...........maybe in the future, who knows. It will be so far down on my "to do" list that it may never happen anyway........But it is always good to have dreams and projects in an abundance that will exceed one's lifespan, that way one will never be sitting around in his later years wondering what shall I do tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure there is BUM as it was offered in 416 Rem and I believe the exterior contour is the same on all the Safari series. But what would I do with a 416 when I already have the Rigby and several 375 bore variations up to the 378 Wby. Besides I just gave all my 416 Taylor brass to Rem Jim cause I decided I would never have need for another 416 Taylor. If I were to go to a 416 bore I'd use a lengthened Ruger case anyway.
The 700 in 300 H&H will remain untouched as I have wanted to play with Messers Holland and Holland's Super 30 Belted Magnum for some time now. I just happen to have 100 factory W-W 180 gn cartridges already to wring her out with.

I am actually not Catholic, it was just a catchy and fitting "lead in" for this thread...........so I guess I can skip the "Hail Marys" and just go shooting then............Which is exactly what I intend to do today.

I have the 700, 300 H&H in hand with a 3-9 Leupold up and mounted already, but have yet to receive the Sako in the mail. I'd post pics but the 700 Classic looks like every other 700 Classic and is pristine without a mark. When I receive the Sako Safari I'll post some pics. It looks to have some decent lumber on it, from the photos I saw and appears to be pristine as well. It is another A IV and is a good match to my 375 Safari.........anyway I'll get some photos up when she arrives. She comes with mounts and a 3.5-10 Vari X III on it so no diddling around when it gets here...........

I feel your pain, CGN has not been good for my bank account, been about a gun a week lately!
I really like the .338 Win Mag, does a terrific job on Ontario Moose, and I am sure it would again if we could only ever get an Adult Validation Tag! WK

The sin is not in acquiring the SAKO Safari, as hard won riches has its rewards; but to deface one is sacrilege. Since your judgment and forwarding address is most certainly assured,

you might as well just go with the biggest, fastest, .338s of them all, .338-378, which I believe, you believe, outruns the Lapua due to it's radius shoulder. Thus you gain .340+P performance, allowing you to spit out 300 gr slugs at 3000 fps (if the barrel is long enough) which certainly puts the little .338 Winchester in it's place.

Boomer, Boomer, Boomer...........you have to read post #4 to see my design criteria..........but I am reconsidering my position on this, as the design features of the Sako Safari lean it more to the heavy to heavy/medium bore, than to the lighter end of the mid bores IMO. That would then cause me to look more to the 416 or 423 bore size..............I have never had anything in a .423 bore, wonder if Ron Smith does .423? I think I might still use the lengthened Ruger case............400 gnrs @2500 fps........HHHHMMMMMMMMMMM

338-378 is best done on a 28-32" single shot or 3 shot Mark V, no sights required, no quarter rib required...........anyway you get the idea. Not my idea of a Safari cartridge in a Safari designed rifle.

But then again, I have gobs of 338 WM brass and dies and if one used a Matrix bullet around 225-240 gn it might be OK just to keep it as it is as a collector.......It's not like I NEED another mid bore or mid/heavy to hunt with.

As far as assuring my final address.................that was probably done years ago, so I quit worrying about that............
