First, I'm a big fan of pure lead. It just seems to do a great job of deadifying critters. I wonder if anyone has tried pure lead boolits in sabots. I have a 250 gr. 45 cal. Maxi ball mould, and a ton of sabots, and was thinking of trying them together - leading wouldn't be an issue.

Are you talking muzzle loader or sabots loaded in cartridges?
Pure lead in a sabot is quite nice but I've read from a few sources that you should stay under 1700-1900fps as the pure lead bullet can start to deform from air resistance before it hits the target. I have no idea if that's true or not though.

I picked up some .45 muzzle loading sabots and tried them in a .45-70. .452" sabots in a .458" bore, I know, unlikely to work... and it didn't. But now I'm thinking of maybe trying some with light loads in a .45 Colt cartridge as the diameter is correct.

They're 50 cal. sabot that I would use in a frontloader. I'll have to follow up on the velocity thing, though, and chrony them.

I have no idea how many pure lead, saboted bullets I have shot out of muzzleloaders, but performance was always reliable on game. In my opinion....pure lead is the way to go in a saboted muzzleloading bullet, anyway. Unlike many jacketed or hard cast lead bullets, a pure lead bullet will usually expand reliably, even at relatively low speeds. Ensuring a deep, wide wound channel and significant energy transfer. A must for quick and humane one-shot kills on game animals. If you are a fan of Ross Seyfried....he often praises the virtues of pure lead bullets, when hunting with blackpowder arms. Whether loaded by the muzzle, or breech. Sure....go ahead and load them in your rifle. They will work just fine.

I've used both pure lead conicals and pure lead cast bullets in sabots in my .50 muzzle loader without issue. I actually prefer using them to conventional pistol HP's in the sabots since they're so much cheaper. I've never managed to shoot any game with my muzzle loader so I can't comment on performance but I've heard nothing but good things about it. The hardest part if finding pure lead to cast with.

I blame my strange experiments for why my brain went to .45 sabots in a rifle case (which are designed for .357 bullets) instead of the much simpler and more common .45 sabots in a .50 muzzle loader.

I have had no luck in either my knight inline or Thompson Sidelock. From 60 - 120 gr charge. Zip, nadda

yes you can use pure lead in sabots .. if it is a 50 cal you can use sabots that are cheep to buy.. what dia are your pure lead bullets sabots are in different sizes ,,, 429dia and 451/452 dia are the most common ,, what kind of muzzleloader are you shooting them in ? MMP sabots; google them or Harvester muzzleloader they will send you what you need .. or call cecil at PR bullets he sells pure lead bullets and sabots he is the go to guy for pure lead Good luck

I think you should be able to find an acceptable load with lead bullets in a sabot. I've had good luck doing this with one of my previous inline ML's, although I was using 45 colt bullets, and round ball/sabot in another. Just walk the powder charge up, and hopefully you'll find the sweet spot.
