Silicone vs. Gun oil on gun internals ...

Apart from it's sealant tube form, I stay away from silicone-based products. Too much stuff that can be permanently contaminated with it.

If you want slick get some (real) moly-grease.

Follow-up ...

I did try this 'clean and lube with silicone' method on two firearms after last weeks range day.

From a cleaning standpoint it seems to work just like any other spray lube ... cleans deposits of carbon ... wipes away easily ... the barrel interior shines just as it would with oil ... firearm cycles just as it normally does ... trigger feels the same.

It certainly does leave a nicer luster on the exterior of the gun.

After shooting the same two pistols again today they both functioned perfectly, as they always have with oil. One thing I did notice is there was no oil weeping from parts (ie: below the slide or around the take down pins).

Just my experience so far ...

You can also make your own moly grease.....I use white lithium grease and some powder moly used for coating bullets....works great, and a little goes a long way.
