.45 in something other than 1911

"You guys do realize that OP said small budget? Nothing SIG or HK makes fits that description. Plus, I think HK guns are seriously overpriced, but that is just me."

Good point, Matt - that I might counter with this: a lot of new shooters start out on a shoe-string budget and that's fair. But - if you are the new shooter that knows you will be getting into the sport deeper when finances allow - it might be good to save your money and buy a higher end pistol now rather than buying something cheap junker AND a higher end gun later.

I've never bought into that - that "HK" is grossly overpriced. My HK USP Tactical is right on par with the SIG 210 for price, quality and performance. You never hear people saying SIG is overpriced....hmmmmmmm.....I think the reason for that might be that polymer guns have acquired a reputation for being cheap. Maybe folks don't realize that turning out a high quality polymer gun is as demanding a task as doing it with a metal gun? I dunno.

Price and precision/quality are usually mutually exclusive properties and the relationship between them is a matter of diminishing returns. The guy who wants to go and shoot a box of shells with his girlfriend once a month can buy a $400.00 Norc and be pleased as punch with it. The professional competitor shooting a race grade gun is forced to pay whatever it costs for a top end gun that will cost the manufacturer easily over $20K once you figure in all the tuning and custom fitting. Those guns go to their sponsored designated factory shooters and duffers like you and I will never see them at Cabelas or the dealers. If they can produce a gun that shoots 1/8" tighter at 50m, and cycles and locks up 1/100th of a second faster... they will pay what ever it costs without a second thought. Such is the value of medals, endorsements and bragging rights.

I tell new shooters to buy mid range guns - preferably used from somebody that will let you shoot them first. They hold their resale value much better than new ones or low end guns. In fact, it is my scholarly opinion that for regular gunnies like us - the used racks hold far more bang for the buck than the shiny new guns fresh out of the box! All my own best personal guns were used. Just my two bits, your mileage may vary.

Possibly it is the tupperware thing, but I own a G19 and a Ruger 22/45 and just bought an M&P45 so I am OK with plastic guns. I don't have extensive HK experience, have handled some and shot a couple that friends had at the range. I never found them to be significantly better than a Glock for anything I have done, except that the price is much higher. As usual, YMMV.

That seems fair. Most of my guns have been bought used as well. I only buy new when used is hard to find for whatever reason and I can get what I think is a good price on the deal.

i am a die hard 1911 man but let me tell ya. my wife bought me a gently used german Sig p220 and wow talk about a nice shooter. one of the nicest triggers i have used, and having the decocker is a nice bonus. also all steel is a nice thing too. the only thing im concidering changing is the sights but thats personal taste.

Small budget, Then shouldn't be looking at 45 ACPs You can get 100rds of 9mm for 50rds of 45acp.

Your not going to find a 45 ACP thats worth spending money on, under the cost of new Norc 1911s

I definitely concur that if cost is such an object, 9mm would be a better choice. It doesn't take much shooting to equal the price of the gun.

While I think that 1911s are the primary justification for .45 ACP, a S&W M&P 45 would be my non-1911 choice in that calibre.

the main reason I started reloading was to feed my .45, 1/2 the price of factory ammo, about the price of 9mm.

That is one of my favorite p220s for sure. German, no rail, side release. Very nice. Sounds like you have good taste in guns and wives

If 'small budget' is $1000 or less, I'd suggest (in descending order of price) a used HK45, FNP45, or Glock 21 from the EE. If you don't mind an older Glock, Gen 2 and Gen 3 pop up for pretty good prices :)

Also per the post below, the Jericho .45 would also be a good choice. I have one in .40, and it's actually quite nice :)

What are my options for a .45 thats not a 1911? Also, lets say I'm on a very small budget. (Obviously I will be looking for used when (if) the time comes). Just start throwing brands and models out there, give me a good spot to start researching.

Sig P227 is a great piece, but not for those with a 'small budget' [just save up a little longer...compared to what you'll spend on ammo to shoot through it, a few hundred more doesn't mean much].

M&P45 might be a better bet. Great gun and a used price might work for you...
