I have both a cz varmint and a savage. I bought the savage in laminate so its as ridged as needed. the savage is cheaper and shoots very well but the cz is by far the better rifle. for what you are doing the savage would be great.

The Savage TR (and TRR) are actually nice-ish rifles, good ergonomics, decent trigger, etc. Having said that, Savage QC has let me down huge on the last couple I bought so I'm no longer a Savage rimfire shooter. A couple of months ago, I decided to add a CZ back to the collection (452 Varmint 22lr) and it was a nice reminder of how nice a $500-$600 rimfire rifle can be. I've yet to actually shoot the thing mind you (just got the scope a few weeks back) but fit/finish is typical CZ=very nice. I'm not exactly sure what Savage wants $-wise for one of those TRs, but if they're around the same price....then I'd suggest the CZ. Hands-down. I've never seen any Savage rimfire that I feel is worth $500+, and I've owned/shot plenty of them. I think Savage is getting a little ahead of itself price-wise on both it's centerfire and rimfires if you ask me, but I still shoot a Savage .223 as my primary varmint gun.

CZ rings~I used these, they came highly recommended to me and fit/work perfectly; http://warnescopemounts.com/product/722-1-inch-7-322-medium-rings/

CZ with a YoDave trigger kit.

I got my rings at ProLine shooters (Calgary) - they're CZ rings. Other dealers carry CZ rings as well.

I was tempted to get a Savage until I borrowed and tried a few. I can't get past the blade safety trigger. Otherwise they're good, accurate rifles.

Thanks for the ring purchase source, as this morning i have handled a local CZ 455, and i have commited to it.
To have handled the savage prior, CZ fit , finish, and bolt cycling feels much nicer. I feel like i am getting more for my money.
So my choice is done, CZ

Kawicrash, my desire for tactical stock is not for tactical purposes, its to create a familiarity for a future McMillan 308 build.

From what i see boyds make a mcmillan clone for CZ, i'll source one in time.

I have a Savage BSEV, as well as a Savage Cub. My son has a CZ (don't remember the model). The Cub is very accurate, but too small for me to judge its accuracy. I tested about 30 kinds of ammo in both, and have used both fairly extensively. The Savage has a slight edge in terms of accuracy. However, there is no comparison in terms of fit, finish, and workmanship. The CZ wins hands down. The Savage, on the other hand, uses standard rings, and is less expensive. I also like the look of the Savage more than the CZ, but if you like a classic look, then the CZ is better. I think in the end, it 6 of one or half-dozen of the other. Also, if I were hunting, I would prefer the CZ over my version of the Savage.

I have a Savage BTVSS and a CZ 455 Varmint thumbhole fluted barrel in 22 cal.

The CZ is a little more expensive than the Savage. The fit, finish and bluing on the CZ are outstanding. The thumbhole stock is a little thicker than on the Savage (Boyd’s) and the average feel is more balanced and is like having a center fire rifle in your hands. I have installed BKL Technologies 1 inch long double trap dovetail Rings (301 MB) and a Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12X44 Scope on it. The trigger is adjustable on this new model. The gun being new, the bolt action is stiff but will be smoother with time.

The Savage BTVSS is well made; the Boyd’s stock is a little thinner but also offer a good grip and cheek support. The stainless steel bull barrel is well finished and very good looking, but the mag is a little flimsy. It has the adjustable accutrigger. I have installed an inexpensive Marstar scope on it and it is doing the job for the time being.

The out of the box trigger pull on both of these rifles is very good. These guns are better than me as a shooter :) and I have just started trying different ammo to find what is working best with them. With cheap Winchester Dynapoint ammo (The old black box package). I am starting to get one inch groupings at 50 yards with both of these rifles, with a little advantage to the CZ because of the higher quality Elite Scope. I know that I will eventually do better with practice and the right ammo,

You can easily spend a lot of money on a 22 rifle it depends on what you want to do with it. I am a hunter and also a sport shooter and I was looking at getting into precision shooting without getting in the big league of Anschutz guns or center fire etc.

In this regard, I think that the Savage BTVSS and the CZ 455 Varmint are great platform to start with. The Savage MK is made in Canada, less expensive and parts more accessible. The CZ are better finished and balanced and worth the investment and waiting time to find one. Both are tack drivers in the hands of experienced shooters.

Yes thank you! In ontario theres a shop (airgunsource.com) that stock bkl rings.
The concept of airgun stuff on a real gun is a bit funny still but i know it should work now.

I will give it a few weeks for my vortex to apear in the EE or i will buy new.
This spring i'll give it a try to have an entry in the 50M rimfire challenge on these here forums

I don't remember if its been mentioned, but you can get Weaver blocks that mount on the rail of .22's to allow the use of regular rings. I bought some last week for my Henry (or was it my Norc?) for $20 at SAIL. Just remember that if you go that route, you'll need lower rings than normally.

I have an air gun source rail adapter on my 45/70 sxs rifle. 500 rounds of 350 gr bullets at 1900+ fps and another couple hundred heavier bullets at a little less velocity and it still rock solid. I also have one on my 22 mag. Well built and stand up well

Time to spend some money on ammo. I have found the sk standard plus works the best for 50yd groups in my CZ 452 Varmint. Mini mags great for distance plinking. I ve tried a lot of expensive ammo from rws 50 to federal match, center x. eley .I've tried 4 different types of rws, cci green tag. Aguila SV and subs. Start with some sk standard plus and save yourself some money.

Very interesting to learn that you made some tests and the SK Standard Plus are getting you good results. I made some searches on the net and I am wondering where would be the best place to order them in Canada !!! Any ideas !!

Thanks for the feedback !
