Hey guys,

Really looking for some good input here. I am normally found shooting 30 caliber rifles, but I'm looking to go a different direction.
I'm doing a low recoil/long range precision build. I'll be using the rifle mostly for hunting and long range target shooting. Hunting wise I'll be after whitetail and coyote up to 600-700 yrds.
What I'm looking for is feedback/opinions/recommendations regarding the two calibers above or any other caliber which you think would suit the description above!

Thanks in advance,
Ben

6.5 SLR
6.5X47 lapua
260AI

I am not into 6.5 creedmor due to brass availability Hornady ( don't like them) or nosler ( difficult to source and not cheap)
II do prefer lapua brass in all my calibers when possible
I went on the 6.5 road this year and decide to go with 260AI but single shot I would not recommend it on a repeater

for your hunting purpose I will choose 260 first or even 6.5*55 in a modern action but long

if you intend to some target
6.5*47 lapua
6.5 slr

I did this same search years ago. Did lots of comparisons, the ballistically the 260 and the Creedmoor are virtually the same. I went for the 260. Mines just a hunting rifle, not a precision rig, but it shoots as well as most precision rigs I have fired. When I bought mine Lapua didn't make 260 brass, so I started with 243 Lapua brass, but now you just buy Lapua brass and away you go.

I made a choice between those two calibers last year.

After looking at the "support" for the caliber in terms of who builds a model in 6.5 Creed (a few), vs 260 (almost none), plus availability of brass, 6.5 (hornady and nosler) which is "in stock" many places vs 260 (Rem and Lapua) - nobody had any in stock when I was looking and even off the shelf ammo if that was the only source for brass (I have three different 6.5 creed choices at work, zero in 260 - still on back order after two years), my choice was made rather simple.

At the moment at least, the "industry" looks to be supporting the Creed while even Remington looks to have abandoned the 260 - so I went with the Creed.

I have both a .260 for my PR rig and a Rem M700 260 SA RH action for my coyote rig. What I really like about the .260 is the brass fun. I can buy Lapua brass (more $$) or buy .260 ammo (Remmy factory loads) and take that brass, but I find piles and piles of once fired .243 brass at my home range / Gun club. :dancing banana:

And then I take that once fired .243 brass and neck it up from 6mm to 6.5mm. Easy peasy! Lots of brass that way! Life does not get better. :)

In the meantime I'm still a .308 lover through and through....

Cheers and enjoy the searching and building process!

The 6.5 X 47L has a long neck (lots of room to seat long with lots of bearing surface) ...and having a shorter case than the 260 Rem, it is possible to seat bullets very long and still fit them in most SA magazines. Velocity between the '47 and the 260 is very similar, but IMO, the 47' is much easier to tune.

I just went through the same decision making process where I wanted a lighter PRS Match Rifle that was also appropriately weighted for hunting. I had a Savage 10 in 260 and loved it so I thought I would take it up a notch and went 260AI. It is still to early for me to determine whether there was an advantage of going AI over straight 260 but thus far there have been zero feeding problems with fireformed brass and I get fantastic accuracy out of my fire forming loads:

5 shot group, 0.274"

I chose to bypass the 6.5 creedmoor because of the limited brass and die offerings and I was hoping for more velocity than the 6.5x47

Honestly there is no wrong decision here.

BEAUTY rifle there and a great shooter too Thks for sharing ! RJ

I know that .260 brass can be formed from .243 brass in one stroke. Two strokes from .308

Not sure about the 6.5

Go 6.5 SAUM 4S, the George Gardner round from GA precision the wildcat is being turned in to a production round, Hornady is making brass, Redding is making dies and reamers. A 6.5 out of a 300 WSM case, what could go wrong? Also apparently 26 inch tubes are ####ting out 140 gr boolits at 3100+ FPS. I'd like to some day build myself one and see how fast you could get the 130 gr Berger AR hybrids going.

If the brass is not available in the US right now, it will take years for there to be enough to trickle into Canada. Not to mention brass options in general. In addition, if you care about PRS matches at all the extra case capacity is wasted since you are maxed at 3100fps. You are also limited by magazine capacity.

Spend the last few months comparing the 6.5CM vs 260Rem. Conclusion is for reloading 260Rem hands down. Lots of Lapua brass available or can neck up/down from 243/308. Already got all my 260 reloading ready, just waiting for the CTR.

Not sure why one poster had issues with 260 Brass, lots of them around (or maybe they were talking about ammo). For non reloaders go 6.5CM as 260 ammo (esp. precision stuff) was hard to find.

The OP should clarify if they reload or not. Otherwise most of the advise here, while very good, doesn't come into play. I agree with Burnaby, if you don't reload: 6.5CM.

Sorry guys for neglecting my post here. Since I do not have any experience reloading I am siding with the 6.5 creedmoor. As for hunting whitetail and coyote with this caliber what opinions do you guys have towards that?

Thanks
Ben
