After lusting after one for several years, I was able to find a "as new in the box" Gold Label. I've read a lot of comments on the Gold Label on the net. All comments by those who own them love them. Most negative comments are from folks who have never even picked one up and seem to have a hate on for anything Ruger. I've seen folks saying that they are too heavy (This one weighs 6.5lbs) -- the wood to metal fit is bad -- proud wood. I for one have handled only four before this one and they all exhibited a high quality of craftsmanship with very nice fit. The wood is indeed proud at the receiver -- this has never bothered me and many of my English and German guns do indeed sport proud wood. Many classic guns of the past (Purdy, Dickinson, Macnaughton) were left proud because it was expected that the owner would send it back to the maker for refinishing on occasion to remove any hunting marks and spruce it up a bit. We have become much too Americanized where bigger is better and refinishing is a mortal sin. Thankfully the latter is slowly changing. Anyway here's my RGL -- only one box fired and in the original box.
Cheers, John

Nice Gun and it is always fun to read about someones New to Them Firearm !
I like the satin finish too, just not a fan of the two tone, but do not get me wrong I am not criticizing your choice in gun or finish.
This is going to be a field gun right?
Thanks for sharing your new Gun !
Rob

Good looking gun, John. Can hardly call a 6.5 pound gun "heavy". Was just reading some very negative comments on another board. Refreshing to hear your perspective as a new owner. And I could not agree more about the silly cult of original finish that exists south of the border. Guns need to be maintained.

Very nice find. How are those barrels regulated? Personally, the proud wood doesn't bother me either if the form is subtle. Ruger had started an excellent venture with the RGL and sadly put the brakes on production due to various reasons. In 2005, I had walked into Epps with a firm intention to acquire one. Unfortunately, the lone specimen in their inventory had a thin sliver of wood missing from the fore end so instead that day I had walked out with a 28ga CG Magnus Grouse, a shotgun I eventually sold. Never saw another RGL in the stores since that got discontinued but never looked too hard either.

Haven't patterned them but they both break hell out of clays on the skeet field. Can't wait for my first pheasant hunt on Oct 14th.

Nice find congrats . Handled one not my cup of tea but that what makes the world go round kind of like my Parkers many because I shoot them well and thAts what it's all about for me

Why were Ruger so quick to pull this delightful double from their production. Manufacture numbers of these must be very low as you rarely see them for sale. anyone have the real story?? David Henry.

They lost money on every gun and then Bill Ruger died. It was his project. End of story.

Beautiful! I have always had a fondness for Ruger firearms, from their bolt action and single shot rifles to their single action revolvers and of course the Red Label and Gold Label shotguns. I have owned an example of almost all their firearms except the shotguns and their more "tactical" rifles and pistols. Nice to hear it is pleasing to you, I always liked the clean simple lines of the shotguns, it has a quiet elegance to it.
