Hunter Orange Necessary?

Because I don't like orange? lol

Sounds like the woman with scars all over her face from a windshield because the seat belt would crease her clothes.

Or the welder with 20% vision in one eye because he was to handsome to wear safety glasses.

Or you could do that this guy does:

With the "he hum" quality of hunters I see at the range every weekend, if I ever go hunting I will wear orange + hi-vis + strobe light on my head!

I keep encountering dog and recreational walkers who don't wear anything bright and human looking; I keep wondering if I should say something but it would probably be interpreted as a threat of some kind, telling them to stay out of the woods etc.
The dogs and I wear blaze orange on my own property during the thankfully short gun season in these parts. Even though the land is posted I wouldn't trust my life or my dogs to some moron from the city who gets out once a year.

Every fall I let my non-hunting neighbours know when the gun season is in effect. On shared land I'd say something like, "Sir/Ma'am, there is an open hunting season on right now. I just noticed how difficult it was to see you and your dog. I'm wearing blaze orange so other hunters can see me and I can remain safe. Orange vests aren't expensive and you can pick one up at any Canadian Tire."

You won't be "lol" if you're in the OR with someone picking birdshot out of you, a simple act of self preservation of simply wearing an orange hat to make yourself visible, even when you're hunting with friends, and make sure they do likewise

I'd rather be seen then shot!! You're a new hunter and haven't quite learned the ropes yet, a wise choice would be to take the advice of all veteran hunters. As it's been mentioned grouse don't notice you more, only other hunters. To me it seems as if there is another reason why you don't want to be wearing orange.... anyways wear it.

I had an uncle who worked in an OR out in the sticks, and in the old days men coming in with a face full of #4 birdshot was apparently not too unusual. My uncle would pick out what he could and tell them that most of the shot could never be removed and they'd have it visible on their faces for the rest of their lives. They'd say they were going to have it removed no matter what, but my uncle knew about the complexity of nerves around the face and the cost of such operations and he was probably correct.

Funny. When Alberta did away with the orange requirement hunter shootings didn't go up. In fact it's been "proven" that in areas where orange isn't mandatory people tend to identify their targets more consistently before shooting. It seems many "hunters" will shoot if they don't see orange....food for thought.

I have a orange, yellow, and reflective cross on a construction safety vest I use. It's 380"-400" square inches. Haven't used it yet but still need a hat I can stand to wear. Probably get a tuque cap.

If it isn't a solid 400sq"....when hunting in rifle season....then it isn't valid.

In Ontario, hunter orange is a must during any open big game season except while hunting bear from a tree stand, but any other time of the year while hunting small game you don't have to wear it!

My opinion is for my safety, I like to be seen as human, in any season.
Like life jackets in the boat, they won't do you any good if you fall in the water without it on!

In BC not required but...... During moose season when I drop one or more of my partners in the bush along the lake and it is time to pick them up that orange tuque is what I look for. Stands out real nice.

I would like to see the requirement for hunter orange rescinded in Manitoba. I doubt it has ever saved anyone's life, yet I'm aware of at least one circumstance where a hunter wearing a full one piece blaze orange suit and hat was shot and killed while pushing bush, even though his partner knew he was there. Hunter education has done far more for public safety, and has prevented more property damage than blaze orange requirements ever can. Hunter orange requirements might actually endanger others, as the assumption might be that game is not orange, and if the hunter doesn't see orange, he can shoot. But if a hunter knows that others in the area are wearing neutral colors, he is more likely to take the time he needs to fully identify his target before shooting, thus making him a safer hunter.

Alberta isn't Ontario though- broadleaf trees and heavy brush here, dark, dark shadows everywhere, deer moving slowly in and out of treelines. But the point about the possibility of someone shooting if no orange is seen is food for thought for sure.

It's solid orange, not mesh, with a yellow "X" that has a reflective strip inside the yellow "X". I was told by a conservation officer that it would be fine as long as it's not mesh and I had a hat? (I didn't even know the rules had changed at the time when I spoke with him as I've never gone hunting, outside the family farm small game.)

Now I'll need to check the website and/or email the MNRF.

I know that a pusher (dogger) wearing orange is seen far far sooner by the watchers than if they were not wearing it. Personally I would not go into woods at any time of the year without it. I even wear it when turkey hunting and only take it off once I'm set up and put it back on when it's time to leave.

As for OP not liking orange.... it's tempting to respond with sarcasm but suffice to say that some common sense is needed.
