Lee Enfield Scope Mount

I have a 1943 Lee Enfield that I beleive is a No1 MK3 that says parker hale on the front sight hood that I am looking for the scope mount for. I have taken it to my LGS and they said it would have to be re-drilled for a proper mount. I would hate to have to drill anymore holes in this rifle. Has anyone seen a scope mount with this configuration? My second question is there anyone in canada that sells a full wood kit for a No1 mk4? I have one that has been butchered into a hunting rifle and am interested in restoring it to near original configuration.

the two front holes look to be standard size holes but the rear two on the bridge are smaller.

it with its butchered brother.

Ps sorry for the huge pictures.

That No.1 Mk.III has already been drilled for a scope mount. Try a Weaver TO-1, which will use tip-off rings, to see if it lines up with those holes. Tip-off rings are not the best idea on a centrefire but if installed carefully they will work. Or a gunsmith could drill a non-specific Weaver mount to match the holes in the rifle and you could use any Weaver-type ring.

Your No.4 Mk.1 has a shortened barrel. It was cut in front of the foresight to remove the part with the bayonet lugs which would protrude from the original wooden stock. This was a common part of sporterizing No.4 rifles. If you can find all the stock parts to restore they'll go on but it still won't look right. Only you know if it's worth it to you to do it anyway.

The #1 mk3 has a rounded bridge where the stripper clips are fed which is why the previous owner ground it down. He was looking for a flat surface to put a rail on. That being said, I suspect that the ground part is not true to the barrel. My suggestion is to use a side mount. It will use the flat side of the receiver as a reference point. Addley Precission sells one and it requires the drilling or one hole on the side. They also sell both picatini and weaver smithless mounts for the #4 mk1. Smithless meaning they are a straight bolt on.

Your #4 mk1 is more than likely a Fazakerley factory conversion. During the 1960s a bunch of #4 mk1 were sporterized and re barrelled at Fazakerley and imported to Canada. All of these sporters look identical to the one you have. They have the painted black tip on the for end, barrel cut short of the bayonet lug, a ramp sight installed and original butt stock and worm gear rear sight. If you look at the barrel, you will noticed export markings and no de comp marks. I have a couple of Fazakerley sporters and with a bit of work, they make very good shooters. My Fazakerley #4 is highly modified and shooters 1" groups at 100 metres.

Neither of these rifles make good candidates for restoration because there have been too many irreversible alterations. The rear sight and rear stock on the #4 is worth something but not enough the redo the entire rifle.

Your No. 1 appears to be drilled and tapped for the Parker Hale #24 one piece scope base that uses the Parker Hale RALS rings. Parker Hale made at least two widths of bases - I have a "BA 24" which is about 19.5 mm at the widest part of the base, and a "BB 24" which is about 16.5 mm at the widest part. Front holes are about .440" center to center, and appear to be #6 x 48 screws - .135" major diameter. The rear holes are about .325" center to center and appear to be #4 screws - .110" major diameter. These Parker Hale "rails" have two locating lugs - one that bears on rear of the front receiver ring as a recoil lug, and the second that bears on the front of the charger guide slot.
These rails have a "divot" at the rear - the RAHS rings have only one base with the corresponding recoil stud. The front base holes are deeper than necessary for the screws, which suggests to me that the stud on the front ring from an RALS pair would fit into the top of a front screw hole.

Thanks for the input guys. Yea the Parker-Hale BA24 scope mount looks dead on. Now I have to try to find one, any ideas?

Found this pic on the net while searching.

Does anyone know what mount this is drilled for?
the fellow i bought it of said it might be for an ati mount, be wasn't sure.

That looks like a weaver TO 1 base . They take the narrower tip off rings . I've got one on my PH sporter . They work fine , though some don't like the fact that it uses the narrow base . When they're set up properly , you won't have any problems

So when they sporterized the no 4 mk1 they changed the barrels? My Parker-Hale no1 mk3 has been blued but I don't know if the no 4 mk1 has ever been blued. There is no evidence of it anywhere and the barrel is machined roughly in the best of parts. You can see what it appears to by lathe marks all down the barrel.
