The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Anyone know where to get the plastic 5 rounders? Preferably ruger brand? Maybe it's my clumsy google-fu, but i can't find em anywhere.

if I remember right, prophet river, wanstalls and wolverine seem to be the go to sources for the rifles and spare mags.

Which of course says a good deal in itself.

I don't think seeing lots of scouts in EE is a negative reflection on the rifle itself if that is what yer hinting at there.
I bought 3 in .308 , 2 off the EE and one from a store. All 3 shot very well , with excellent hunting accuracy to 200 yards (furthest so far)
I sold one because I didn't need 3 LOL the second I've dismantled and pulled the barrel while I figure out cloning the barrel on my lathe out of a .338fed blank ;) the 3rd is my wifes, in walnut and she's keeping it LOL
I do think guys buy them thinking they will be super light and the novelty of the scout rail. Then decide it wasn't quite what they were after. Off to the EE they go LOL. They sell fast though.

Get a XS sight rail with rear aperture, you'll be glad you did.
80 n change USD from brownells

I'm thinking about going this route; I want more capability than a sub 3x scope with a tiny FOV provides, but I don't want to have to remove the rear sight to do so. I like having a quick iron sight option. Granted, I've never actually looked through a scout scope, but there doesn't seem to be a feasible option for me to try one. I'm very comfortable with 3-9x40mm scopes, though.

I can echo that feeling, while I think it's a good rifle, after a year of ownership, I feel I bought it for the wrong reasons. I wanted a general purpose rifle, now I only need it as a hunting rifle, which has me ditching the 10 round mag and wanting a more conventional hunting optic.

I bought a scout for the "fun" factor. A bolt action rifle, with a short barrel, iron sights and a big mag. I figured I'd put a red dot on it if I wanted some optics.
I quickly realized that with the big mag poking out was a pain to sling the rifle, and as much as I love iron sights, I preferred to use them on my Lever actions. So I ditched the mags, and added a scope.

This rifle has now become my all time favorite brush hunting setup. It handles great in the timber, and can reach out to 300y no problem. Plus the accuracy and consistency always surprises me, It will put 150gr Blue box and 165gr Partitions into 3/4" ragged holes for 6 shots every time.

Plan B

Still a work in progress, I'd like to eventually put the full length XS Sights top rail and mount it on see through rings. But what about cheek weld, you say? Don't care, it's a brush gun, not a bench rifle.

Love my Gunsite Scout I use it for everything from grouse too bear and moose it's accurate with factory ammo and just stupid accurate with hand loads. I traded my ruger 416 for the scout and I don't feel like I need anything else!!!:)

Picked up a pair of polymer mags when I was in Calgary for Thanksgiving weekend:

The 5-round mags are great; they fit snug, carry nicely with less overhang, can be top loaded with the bolt back, a great hunting mag and I think the rifle should ship from the factory with these. The 10-rounders, however, I dislike almost as much as the factory, steel, 10-round mag. The follower can tilt like crazy; I'm finding that I'm charging it like a pistol mag; down then back, for the first few rounds, then pressing them straight down for the remainder, to avoid having the rounds sticking up, almost 90 degrees out of the feed lips.

Just picked up my Ruger Gunsite Scout last week. Synthetic version. Got it brand new from a guy who had recently lost his job.
Shot 15 rounds and fell in love. I should receive my Burris 2.75x20mm scout scope later this week. (another great deal)
What rings should I buy?
I'm also gonna add a sling and a 5 shot magazine. (Don't really like the two 10 rounders that came with it...but I'm keeping them anyway)

For a brief time, I did regret my GSR purchase, but with the way the election seems to be unfolding, I no longer have those regrets.
