I'm looking to put a 12" Rail on a 14.5" CQ-A. Instead of installing a low profile gas block I was considering a Hack/Slash on the front sightpost instead.

Any gotcha's I should consider before attempting such a job? (Caveat, first AR)

Anyone done this and have any experience they can share, also if anyone knows of a place that carries as 12" quad rail that will fit the CQ-A that would also be helpful.

thx.

I am also going to be doing this shortly. That front sigh post sure doesn't want to come off, so I'm probably going to have to leave it on the barrel while I'm working. Have you tried taking your taper pins off yet?

So mine hasn't even arrived yet... Just planning on it. With the right punch the pins should come off that front sight post. I don't want to modify it ON the firearm.

I tried the punches and a few hefty whacks with a sledge hammer. They didn't move and I'm worried about mushrooming the pins. I've heard that some people have tried a good penetrating oil. Maybe that will help.

Use a dremel with carbide cutting wheel, trim the front sight tower down slowly, remembering that you can't put back what you take off. Smooth the edges off, and Voila. Hit with some barbecque paint and you've got a low profile gas block that's more secure than most/all aftermarket ones.

Depending on the rail you choose you may have to change the barrel nut too. So removing the FSB may be necessary. Just a heads up.

Yep, I'm in this boat, because I want to go with a free-float rail. So I need to change the Barrrel Nut.

As soon as I can find a free-float in the right length that will fit.

This is a free float rail, on a Norc upper, I didn't remove the barrel nut, has a continuous top rail and is available in different lengths

It's a MidWest Industries rail - you can get them from Wolverine.

How is it free float without removing the barrel nut? A free float has a replaced nut so it has something to mount to, So it's a two piece rail?

The problem becomes correctly fastening the new gas block, so that it doesn't move and shut the gun down. You won't be able to taper pin the gas block, unless you have a machine shop at your disposal. Most low profile gas blocks require you to drill a dimple for the set screw to sit in. As far as fitting the Midwest rail, it takes about 10 minutes, it's a two piece rail that clamps to the existing barrel nut. Remove the delta ring and spring, assemble the new rail, torque. There is no way that removing, replacing and re-torquing the barrel nut and replacing the gas block is easier - I've done both. Removing the barrel nut requires a receiver block or a reaction rod, socket, and torque wrench, replacing the gas block requires a drill press with v blocks. The other method requires a dremel. Up to you.

PS the guy who presses the taper pins into the gas block, is apparently the same guy who torques the barrel nut.

So... Being that this is a CQ-A --- and my build is "On the cheap" let's keep that going....

I got the same $27 quad rail.. http://www.dx.com/p/aluminum-alloy-...rench-for-m16-rifle-black-159630#.Vkdg61WrSUk

Fit's 100% PERFECT.. The fit and finish is superb. Very secure... So happy now..

I have a few red dot's sitting around, one on proprietary weird sized rings (Bushnell Trophy) I also have a TRS-25, and a cheapy one from DX. Problem is - they are all too low for the factory gas block sight.

I would love to figure how to absolute co-witness one of these, but need to raise them up. From what I am seeing, a 0.83" Riser should do it. The UTG Cheap one should do that.

Any comments?
