Newb to IPSC: Equipment needed question

I won't disagree that you'll see most shooters with 5-6 mags but I'm pretty sure the longest course of fire allowed is 32 rounds minimum. I did my black badge and novice match with 4 pouches and I put a stripper mag in my back pocket. Since then I've now gone to a 5th pouch (magnet actually) and carry a 6th mag as a stripper in my pocket.

For a long course of fire I believe it is 32 rounds maximum scoring , with a minimum of 24 rounds.. with that being said you can fire as many rounds as you wish.

I used to use my "problem" mags as the stripper mag, but I hate carrying heavy stuff in my pocket. Then I made up this to ride on my belt, just behind my holster. It sure beats carrying a round in your teeth as you step up to load and make ready.

While I wouldn't specifically waste money on a Serpa, I own an Israeli-made button retention holster that I run in 2/3-gun matches on my 2" belt. Never had an ND with it. Just takes dryfire practice. I got it after a very good competitor had his Shadow fall out of the Bladetech at a match. Yeah, adjusting the retention would have done the trick, but I liked the idea of having a dedicated belt with all the bells and whistles.

Just my 2 cents. I run a Sig P226 in a blade tech holster and I carry 6 mags on me. It's a good set up but your belt can get crowded depending on what type of pouches you use.
One note on the p226, being double action I have found that it takes more practice to get that first shot out of the holster exactly where you want it.
Before you invest in a holster rig, mags and pouches take both the 226 and the m&p tonthe range when some of the IPSC guys are there and try some drills. Find out which gun works best and most consistently for you. Then invest in equipment.
I am in Ottawa as well, which IPSC group / Range are you thinking about joining?
Cheers.

Years ago I did my BB course with a sig226 in a bladetech, as well as my first couple matches. No issues whatsoever (then I got into 1911's).

There's a legitimate argument to be made for retention holsters for 3-gun matches.

People HAVE lost their handgun from the holster while shooting their long-guns. Prone shooting can make you particularly vulnerable to it.

But for IPSC handgun matches there's really no point. The buzzer goes off, and you draw your gun.

Just my personal opinion, choose the gun that is heaviest with the sweetest trigger. Successive shots are better with a weighted gun, less recoil. If you need to get a holster for your Sig, there is a manufacturer in B.C. that is well spoken of on this site. Solely Canadian.
And if your not reloading choose a 147 gr bullet for your 9mm, a nicer smoother shoot than typical 124gr

Bladetech is okay. Also friction, so not much different from what came with your M&P.
Local dealers? Why?? They don't carry those as these are "specialty" items only very few people actually buy. Buy online -- eBay, Amazon -- plenty there and better prices.
As to Serpa concealment -- this is for U.S. folk mostly who have concealed carry permit. For IPSC, you need the opposite of concealment :)
