Can I use a "passport" photo for my PAL/RPAL application?

As for me passport photo is perfect for all applications, because it's formal and standard. When I was applying for paper writer position I used passport photo and forget about problems. And it's good I have many photos printed.

I'm confused folks? Why are you printing paper photos? Why aren't you using the online renewal?

I took a selfie with my phone, filled out the online form, uploaded the photo and voila. Had my renewed rpal in 6 days.

Shhhhhh.....these guys are still in the dark ages.

I thought the new renewal system was pretty simple and fast. Maybe 2 minutes from sign in to receipt for payment.
BTW how long from renewal to expiry date since they did yours in 6 days ? I did mine a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard back but I have more than 6 months till expiry.

I need to get my photo done for my application for an RPAL. I had a look at the Canadian Passport website and the sizes aren't the same. But if you go to Shoppers, Costco or Walmart to get your photo taken, can I use a passport photo? Can it be in colour, or must it be Black & White?

Thanks...

I believe it must be colour. The application lists the exact measurements needed for the photo by the way. You can just hand that over to whoever is going to be taking your photo. For me, I got my passport photo taken at a CAA and just trimmed it myself.

When I went to Black's for mine, they already had the RPAL details in their computer. Now that they're gone, I'm not sure if anybody else does. You can ask and if they don't have it, just give them the printout of the details.

Photo printing software at all places that offer passport or other ID photos allow the user to make templates that match all the specifications. The suggestion that passport size works for everything is incorrect. It may work for a PAL application but they won't work for a US Visa or some other Visa applications. If the operator at the lab cannot make a correct size right away, they may not have the info. Sometimes, they haven't set up a particular Visa and the individual at the counter might not know how. Usually, they can still take the photo but might have to wait for someone with more experience to print it. Also, if you have an obscure request, it's helpful if you print out the dimesions required. That said, in Canada all these places should be able to print a PAL photo.

I know. TL;DR.:p

Shopper's Drugmart has the clear templates to use to verify that your photo has the right dimensions to be used for both your PAL and RPAL... It's just funny that the Canadian Government has 1 photo spec for Passports and a second for PAL/RPALS... Ya'd figure that they would have standardized on a passport photo... but that would make to much sense for government....

Last time I had an extra passport photo and used that. It worked fine.
I don't remember now, I may have cut it down a little.

I used Shoppers Drug Mart. They have the correct PAL size preprogrammed in their system - super convenient. Although, a friend of mine used a selfie more recently for the online application and it worked as well. His application took a while, but was eventually accepted after a few months.
