Hi guys, my rifle should be ready late december and I'm starting to equip for reloading. I was wondering what projectile you're using for LR shooting.

In my case, it's a 308 and I find that the Hornady Amax offer a great BC/$$$ ratio. (advertised BC :) )

I'm undecided between 168gr or 178gr Amax, it all depends if I can manage 2.800" COAL w/ the 178gr in a AI mag.

Planning on Lapua brass and Varget.

Thanks for your inputs.

I use Berger's.

I don't let mag length limit COAL. If your shooting precision, load 'em one at a time.

Chinchaga bullets are worth looking at too. Made in northern AB, and VERY pointy!! Crazy BC's.

I'm running Berger 175 OTM Tac in Lapua brass and 42gr Varget. I have them seated 0.015" off lands and still able to run them in an AI mag. I've had awesome results to 600M so far in a Savage 10 with a 1:10t 24" barrel. They have a G1/G7 of 0.512/0.263 and I believe the A-Max has a G1 of 0.495.

The big one is the chamber and throat that is being cut for you barrel. Do you know which reamer is being used?

All the main brands make wonderful bullets in the 155 to 178gr range.. kind of the bread and butter of US mag fed 308 shooting of which there are a few bullets used each year :)

Another is the Berger 185gr OTM... or Juggernaut/BT. Many FTR shooters use this for 1000yds competition. When you know you will want to reach out beyond 800yds, these heavier slugs are so much nicer in the winds.

a bullet gaining alot of popularity in LR hunting circles is the Berger 210gr VLD. I compete with this bullet and there are plenty of positives about this design. The 208gr Amax and BTHP share similar traits... With these heavier bullets, mag feeding is not ideal but if you can single feed due to a long throat, performance is noticeably better beyond 800yds and in the winds.

Boils down to how you set up that chamber and how you want to run the rifle.

all the options are possible and if you need help with supply, let me know.

Enjoy

I use Amax 178gr in my 308; I've got it stocked in an AI chassis. I did have to bump back the bullet to fit in the magazine to 2.8", but it still shoots like a champ. I use IMR4064 as a powder however, Varget seems to be scarce around here, whereas 4064 is pretty readily available.

A lot of great advice. Sounds like the OP has a good idea, and the suggestions here get him heading in the right direction. Simple truth is everyone had different results with there individual rifles, so will you. Buy a assortment of different projectiles, powders, and primers in relatively small quantity. Play around, you will find the right combination of component, and COAL that the rifle likes.

I suggest small quantities, so you don't get left with expensive and non ideal leftovers.

My choice for 308 was 168 Amax at less than 600 yds. I switched to 178 Amax for LR distances. I played with 155 Scenars for a while but they were a little finicky for me, Amax was more forgiving.

Used IMR 8208XBR and CCI BR2's for both loads with really good results

Edit: I had tested with Varget and got good results as well
