Just going to use this as my utility rifle, don't really care about collectors value or anything, already have a cabinet queen for that :)

But what do you guys recommend for a scope mount? The side mount or the turret mount? Pros and cons? Any good and reliable reproduction makers?
 
Call it a hunch, but I don't think you're going to get much love in this section of the site. Asking how to efficiently drill and tap a WWII milsurp in 2015 is a bit of a faux pas.

This has been done to plenty already so I'd advise you simply sit back and wait for one of those to present itself. Perhaps post a WTB: sniper clone ad in the EE. You'll likely get some hits.

In terms of variations.... the Germans used claw, rail and turret mounts during the war so one of those would be your best bet. I've always liked high turret mounts but that's just my personal preference.

Rather than Bubba a good rifle, look for something that has already been drilled and tapped for mounts or one that's been converted to your liking.
This one was already made up by a gunsmith.
Nothing like an 8 Power Zeiss Zielacht on a K98 Mauser with High Turret Mounts, better than Enemy at the Gates with that Big Scope! I can shoot flies off of T-34 Tanks!
And if you want to keep the original look, go 4X or 6X.

To the OP, what kind of K98k are you modifying? Is it a post war refurb, restored sporter, etc? If it's collectible then I wouldn't recommend messing it up like that. As others have said, buy one already d&t'd. Lots of sporterized ones come up on the EE that would make perfect donor actions.
 
the short side rail is the easiest to install . and the high turret looks cool ,but is a pain in the A hole to install correctly.

Yep I agree. It's a collectible rifle the way it is.

Sell the RC and watch the EE. Lots of d&t'd or otherwise modified K98k's come up on there from time to time. They are often a lot cheaper than a RC is so you'll have money left over to put towards the scope/mounts
 
sell on the EE and get one of the 8X57 rifles on trade ex. some of them already are tapped or have a scope. then you could even make some money.
 
f:P: Please don't butcher yet another Mauser. I bought a "sportered" Mauser 98 from a dealer I help at gun shows. Luckily, it was just the wood that had been mutilated. It was marked SWP MB. I had a period correct laminate stock and metal to bring it somewhat back to original.

As posted several times above, scrounge up a 98 that has already been D&T'd. The 8x57, especially handloaded, can be a first rate cartridge. Even the North American down loaded ammo is plenty for whitetail, etc. YMMV

With a set up like this you should be able to shoot the fly's eyes out at 800 yards, if not continue practising and get back to us once you are ready!

All are an excellent basis for an M69 restoration, or buy a cheaper one that had the diopter sight removed if you intend to drill and tap for a scope mount.

The target stocks can be refinished into a thing of beauty, and the S&L barrels are usually in very good to excellent condition.

I restored mine, added a Timney trigger, glass bedded the action, and recrowned. It shoots iddy biddy groups when I feel like straining my eyes through those diopter sights.
 
Yup, sell the RC and aim for something more to your liking. In my short time in the K98 ring Ive learned to love the K98s, even the RCs are not bad at all. I have one and took the coating off the stock the Russians put on but that's it. Gorgeous wood under that coating.
I'm sure you'd get a buyer in a few days easily, and probably what you paid for it. I've already paid homage to JBMauser :) otherwise I'd help you out.

Thats pretty much what we are talking about, You might as well drill and tap it too.
