I have the ambit (the predecessor) and the gps is excellent. The new model even has Glonass support.
Usually the problem with watch based gps is battery life. My Ambit is actually pretty good, if it's on 10 sec samples it'll last four or five days non-stop. To extend just turn off gps when you camp.

When you plug it into your computer it shows your path on google terrestrial maps. Very cool.
I have some created super accurate maps of dirt bike paths and such because of it.

Hello wildphil24,

Comparing it against the Garmin Tactix, the Suunto Traverse is better as an everyday device. The Suunto has more functionality in terms of Activity Tracking and subjectively better styling while the Garmin places heavy emphasis on navigation.

As far as the GPS functionality, it should be use in conjunction with a physical map. The Traverse was very quick to acquire a signal and far better than GPS watches of the past.

These look great, by the way. And the price point is impressive for the feature list. Interestingly enough, I have been getting ready to pull the trigger on an Garmin Fenix 3 but looking closely at the feature list for this new offering fromSuunto, I am sold on the Traverse! I really like that it doesn't have ab over-bloated feature list like the Ambit3 and Fenix 3. It retains all of the core functionality of the Ambit3 plus GLONASS! What's not to love?!

I suspect I'll be in this afternoon to grab one... :)
