Colt Gold cup 1911

Hi all,

In the market for a nice full size 1911. The Gold Cup appeals to me. It looks great and it is a Colt. Any comment on this pistol? Worth the 1500+ tag price?

Decent 1911. Custom shop mid range pricing , similar to Springfield, Kimber, etc.
Not up to the Les Baer fit and function, but less costly initially.
I use mine for IPSC, accurate and like the wider trigger.

There are many nice 1911s in your price range. The Gold Cup is one of them. It's been around since the 70s(?).
Is it worth it? Only you can answer that.
Depends on what features you want on a 1911 and what type of shooting style you plan on doing with it.

I have one and and i like it. Its pretty accurate. Only downside is the cost of .45 as opposed to 9mm, so i shoot my 9mm pistols more.

Yes I should have specified. I will use it for target shooting, no ipsc or other action sports.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Its been a while since I shot a Gold Cup (the 80s!) I recall being told the recoil spring on the GC was set for target loads only and not to feed full power 230gr ball or +P ammo through it. For some reason, I seem to remember 4.3gr of W231 shooting 200gr LSWC bullets. Seems light to me now but my memory is fuzzy!
I do remember it was very pleasant to shoot and reasonably accurate.
OP, if you want a true premium target 1911, save a bit more and get the LB. it comes with an accuracy guarantee!

Have a Gold Cup Trophy. Very nice to shoot. 230 gr. round nose lead works great.

Just got the new made Series 70 National Match and love it. I've never shot another 1911 as well as I can this one. It's also my most expensive one...

I wasn't about to add another $1300 and more than a years wait for a LB Hardballer. Always wanted a Colt. Now I've got one.

Btw it comes with two springs. One in the gun for hard ball and one in the case for target loads. I simply put a new Wolfe 18.5 in it to eliminate questions.

My GC Series 80 SS built on 07/2014 also came with 2 springs, the heavy one in the pistol and the green coded light one in the case...
It is a very good shooter, very happy to have it in my herd of firearms... JP.

Got one of those too. Good gun, but have grown to dislike the aesthetics and front strap stippling

The OP indicated he will be using it for target shooting. If that actually means NRA bullseye matches, shooting the .45 at 50 yards one-handed, you need a very accurate 1911. Something with an accuracy guarantee that can at least hold the ten-ring at fifty yards. If it's just for 25 yards and plinking, no so much.

Did pass on a deal on a Sentinel Premier STI, lack of inputs and reviews, at + 2K i will not chance it, i will wait for a Monolith or else... JP.

Skip the Colt GC, especially the nasty stainless model. You could do better!
Look at the STI RangeMaster, or the 6" TargetMaster. Bar none in this price range, STI beats all competitors on price, accuracy, and value....

The Range master is a nice package for sure. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Haven't shot the Colt but have been told that the new models are as good as they have ever have been. Too bad no one seems to import the Special Combat Government models. Those are the higher end semi-custom models.

The LB Premier II is very nice as well. It hits that sweet spot just before the jump in price to full customs.
