Rem 783 vs Axis for coyote

Hey guys i will probably be looking for a small caliber rifle like .223 or 22-250 for coyote hunting.

I dont want to invest too much to start with as im not sure that i will have the time for this.

Im looking at the savage axis xp (no accutrigger) and the Remington 783. I already had an axis in .308 in the past and i liked it but now with the 783 to compete i dont know... There is also the ruger american when it goes for sale but still higher priced.


What should i choose between these 2 and in wich caliber (223 or 22-250)?
 
It does come in 22-250 for sure, I have a few in stock (the scoped model - scope is "cheap" but would do in a pinch - it has no markings on it save the 3-9X40 but looks identical to my 1980's vintage Bushnell Sportview) and the price is decent.

I sold one to my hunting buddy. The 243 compact version (he's shorter/smaller and the stock fit him perfect). The compact only has the 20" barrel.

Anyhow, we took it out, broke it in and with Fed Blue box ammo he was getting 3 shot groups that you could cover with a dime @ 100 yards. Impressive. (I did swap out the scope and put a Bushnell Trophy XLT on it)

Now the fit/finish is about what you would expect, the bolt is a little sloppy but it has a detachable mag and it feeds well when cycled. We did pull the recoil pad and used some spray foam (window and door stuff) to fill the butt end - took away hollow sound and stiffened it up nicely.

All in all I was really skeptical about these guns when I ordered them (the price was just too good not to order a couple dozen and there is always a market for entry level stuff), but after observing his gun for a few weeks now I would say that it's "miles ahead of the Axis".

The Axis does shoot accurate but the trigger truly sucks. I would recommend the 783 over the Axis to anyone looking for a "cheap gun".
 
783 is better then the axis....better trigger, better mags which are also half the price of axis mags, stiffer stock, just as accurate or better depending on the gun. Not as ugly as the axis but won't win any beauty contests either lol

I used a 3-9-40 bushnell elite, on a made up rest, they are great for the price, AND, there is a $40 rebate right now!

UPDATE!

Just when i was about to order the 783 at cabelas i checked their clearance section...

I found a remington 700 SPS in .223 for 550$! (Also add free shipping and 35$ mail in rebate)

Can't wait to get it! Now i need a scope lol
 
I have a 783 and an sps. The 783 has a much better finish and a better stock. The 700 stock was so bad i could ajust the trigger where i wanted it and every time i tightened it back in the stock the trigger pull went all over the place from 3 to 6 pounds. I put a timney in and problem was solved for some reason but out of the box no question the 783 was better and cheaper.

That's a pretty bold statement with nothing to back it up....

Either gun would/should do you and the coyotes won't know the difference when a bullet is placed in the boiler room or nerve centre.

Why not get a Wby. Vangaurd ..it will be heavier for sure but dollar for dollar it will shoot the lights out of the two mentioned brands and you can tinker with the trigger if you like, but it will not be required.

This is going to be your entry level gun into the task of eradicaring those dogs?

Why not buy in the EE , you'll buy good quality, less money and better resale...

But, really would like to know the five minute trigger job details first.

I have heard folks say that before! The technology of the 783 seems to have worked, very accurate for the price point!
