My old man has a 300 Wm in need of a scope upgrade. I think I'm going to get him a Leupold but he's never happy so I'd like a concensus on the most pleasing model. He's never had a decent scope and hunts bear and moose. He is a very simplistic individual with a short temper with anything complicated. What would you suggest for model and reticle?

How simple?
Like a 4X or can he manage the twist the ring at the back simple?
VXIII in 2.5-8x40.
Hoywz luvs these things.

I would opt for a VXII 2-7x33 for real simplist-city.

Budget? Magnification? Does he shoot long range or mostly short?

If on a tight budget I would get a Leupold VX1 or VX2 with a duplex reticle. If you can splurge a bit I would get a VX3 no question. If used is an option you can find a good one here on the EE, as new in the box for a great price. Leupold has great warranty, reasonably priced, good glass.

I use a VX3 3.5-10x40 on my shorter range guns and a VX3 6.5-20x40 with 30mm tube on my long range mountain rifle

Well, if your buying Dad a scope that has been working for him.
You best be buying some of his favorite ammo too, cause sure a bears $hit in the woods he ain't going to be happy Not knowing where his gun/new scope combo is hitting especially if he hasn't missed a bear or a moose in a long time with with what he has been using.
My problem is I usually fix things till they are broken....does that make any scense to you.. The OP that is

x3

I have 2 of them and a 3-10 lots of eye relief and super clear optics. If you really want to do it up get the aluminum covers they are not cheap but very nice, screw on and hold closed with magnets. looks very sharp when you compare to the plastic crappy covers.
VX3 2.5-8x is my vote.

since its for your dad, get a nice vx3 1.5-4 or 2.5-8 with a nice boone and crocket reticle, very simple and easy to dial in zero and use for any cal.

Don't know how old your dad is but with my eyes I have problems getting both crosshairs and down range target in focus so I have gone to scopes with side focus and eyepiece focus as eyesight changes you can adjust as necessary . That being said I love my Nikon scopes have had very good luck with them and have a wide variety of powers and models from cheap to expensive. If he's older probably duplex crosshairs are best

VX3.5-10 x 40. If there's a better combination of quality, weight, toughness and price for most hunting situations I don't know what it is. If he absolutely needs to have a siime reticle get a duplex. If you can talk him into a B&C your kids will thank you when they inherit it.

Having said that, if you prefer a 2.5-8 you won't get much argument from me. Rifles look dumb with two scopes on them, so I just picked my favorite set it and forget it scope.

I have a pair of VX3 4.5-14x40. I am in love with them. I bought one and liked it so much I bought the second one. They are the best scopes I have ever used. Just my 2 cents.

300 yards would be far for him. Thanks for the suggestions so far

Get him a plain-vanilla fixed 4X Leupold. Simple to use, bright, crisp optics, near indestructible internals, and plenty of magnification for any game at that distance.

One of the longest shots I ever witnessed on sheep was with an M8-3X Leupold aboard a 270 Winchester.
