Got a project back today that has been at the smith for a while. A few members asked me to share photos when it was done so here goes.

Inspired by the new Canadian rangers rifle. I made this rifle as an all around field gun and hunting rifle for "anything in North America".

I started with a Tikka T3 in the anemic .338 Win Mag. So far I have added a battue front sight set kindly donated by our own "The Kurgan" and a Tikka T3 sight from Skinner Sights (not on his web-sight but I believe he has a few made).

First impressions: Rifle looks very Euro-stylish, I would like to shoot driven boars with it someday. The rear aperture works very well with the front sight hood, I am amazed by how easy it is to get on target and how well I can see through the small aperture. Really looking forward to bringing it out to the range in the next couple of days.

I plan to place it in a nutmeg boyds laminate, and keep the synthetic stock for work possibly painted hi-viz orange.

Tikkas dont do much for me. But I like the Skinner product and the Blanket :)

Happy shooting and im sure it will shoot strait for you

Have you fired it yet? My T3 Lite in .338 weighed less than 6lbs bare and was something like 6.25lbs with Talley lightweights and a 2.5x M8. With 250gr Partitions the recoil...shall we say...got your attention.

^ yes

It is pretty stiff with 250 grain round noses going approx 2700 fps.

The new laminate will have a good recoil pad and I don't find this one so bad with the slip on.

I have the exact same rifle as pictured, but in 9.3 X 62. But I don't get the weight thing... Mine weighed 6 and 3/4 lbs out of the box! With scope, sling and 3 in mag, it goes 7.5 lbs. A 250gr AB at 2760 is less recoil to my shoulder than my 286 Nosler at 2620 load. The 250 AB was used on Oct 1st to shoot a nice blackie at 85 yards. That load was reduced slightly to 2714 to save the scope. It groups into less than 1/2 moa.

Two years ago, I shot a 6-foot bear with the 286 NP and now another 6-footer with the 250 AB. They worked about the same. I retrieved the 286 NP in front of the right hip as it was a frontal shot in the chest, but the 250AB a pass-through diagonally from broadside mid-chest, through the heart and exit low in front of offside shoulder.

The Tikka T3 Lite is a great, practical rifle in my view, with excellent accuracy from its match-grade Sako barrel.

So the "project" was installing a front sight? Did you bob the barrel? It started as the "anemic" .338 WM... and now it is?

Hello, the project is far from finished, use of the word project may reflect more on my professional background than anything, I wouldn't read into it.

I just wanted to show Kurgan his site on the rifle, and some other users had asked to see it when it was done.

As I have lost my job this is as far as she goes this season. It will all be parts changing until a few years down the line when I plan to put a 375 barrel on it. I am pretty new to this, consider you have probably been modifying guns as long as I have been alive, what seems novel to me likely seems old hat to you.

All hype aside; the recoil is certainly noticeable but manageable. I bruised my trigger finger up shooting from the bench and not paying attention (bolt smack). I am happy with the comb of the stock and the irons, the good cheek weld definitely helps with the recoil.

Shoots well, would like to try it on lead slead or proper rest and see how it goes. Amazing how easy it is to shoot offhand with the peep sight.

Anemic 338 win mag is a quote from the grand poobah himself, C-FBMI. I am just kidding, it is far from anemic.

Yep, fit & feel are very personal and very important... how long is the barrel and did you consider shortening it somewhat?

The barrel is longest rifle barrel I have at approx 24.5 inches, with the slip on limbsaver (which coincidentally corrects the length of pull of the rifle to suit me) it is large but not so long I would feel uncomfortable carrying it in the brush.

My original plan was to shorten it, but I decided that with my height and the caliber the original length barrel works fine. Also the long barrel fits perfectly with the balance of the rifle, and I find it to be very well balanced. I may install a banded swivel on the barrel in the future.

For now, more practice with the receiver sight and possibly a date with a very large mule deer and a cinnamon black bear I have seen around.

I plan on removing it in approx 10 years time.

The gun still needs a new stock and an aluminum magazine well and bolt shroud, then a few years of hard use before it is ready for that modification.
