Hey guys

This is just another can you tell me more post.

I just picked up what I thought was a normal Carl Gustav mauser but I think it is more then that?

This is a 1919 Carl Gustav rifle, full wood, all matching numbers, with a near perfect bore. Wood is great, shows a few bumps but overall...just great. This barrel seems to be thicker profile then a normal rifle?

Now this rifle also has a scope. A No. 133 m/42 AGA 3x65..after some quick wikipedia, that model of scope was used on swedish sniper rifles, like the one it is presently on.

Curve ball....on the butt where I think there should be a brass disk, is a 10 pence english coin...i have no clue why...history lesson please?

Any input would be great, any clue on what its worth would also be appreciated. Thanks

The coin is a current circulation 10p coin - value less than a quarter. I'm guessing that it either just happens to fit the cut-out for the original disk, or that the rifle has spent time in the UK. Are there any UK proof marks there?

There are MANY frawks of Swedish snipers these days, with prices here in yUK STARTING at $3000+. Missing data discs are commonplace on all versions, BTW. As your muzzle does not appear to be threaded for the BFA, it is looking good. Is there a letter 'T' stamped on the side of the foresight block? There should be, as sniping rifles were regulated to shoot the later Spitzer bullet - 'Torped' in Swedish. What backsight do you have? Anyhow, your rifle looks just like a rifle, not any kind of a cut-down. See -

In any case - THIS should be required reading for anybody interested in the Swedish Mauser - http://dutchman.rebooty.com/index.html - it will answer all your queries.

when the original importer bought them in 90% were mismatched or made up by them . the coin on stock makes it suspect. remove the coin and post a picture . is there a screw hole in the middle?
serial # for the scope , mount ,and mount base should be the same. rear sight picture would also help ,whats its serial number?
original conversions have other markings added to the rifle.
the best rifles were shipped to the US market where the importer could get premium $$. finding one in Canada would be Great.

I have found that the particular model you have is comparatively easy to fake. I do know of a few that were imported to Canada in the late 80's. The scope base was attached to the receiver with 3 screws, in which each screw also used lock screws to prevent their backing out. In addition, the base was also secured with two tapered dowel pins, one near the front of the base, and one near the rear. The holes for these were drilled through the base and receiver at the same time, then the pins were installed and dressed smooth on the inside of the receiver. If the holes are missing completely, or the base has them but not the receiver, I would be suspect as to the piece's pedigree. Sometimes you see one where the dowel pin holes are there, but don't line up...that could be a base that was changed out at some point, or some OTHER reason, be careful...if it looks suspect...
The two that I saw in the 80's had the bases removed at some point, my guess is that it was when they were imported. The base when installed, completely covers the serial number of the rifle, so to verify, it would have to have been removed. That would likely explain why the two I saw had the 3 main mounting screws holding the base on, but no dowel pins (although the holes were there and lined up) and the three locking screws were also absent.

Read up on them as much as you can, and try to get a feel for what is correct, then experience will have to take you the rest of the way. Good Luck.

Check the MKL for detailed photo montages and background on all three models of these Swedish snipers...

Made later in 1919, yours appears to be:

1899 Swedish m/41 Sniper Riflehttp://www.milsurps.com/content.php?r=277-1899-Swedish-m-41-Sniper-Rifle-c-w-AGA-3x65-m-42-Scope
c/w AGA 3x65 m/42 Scope
(Mfg by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevarsfaktori)

Is it all matching and are the double crowns anywhere together on the stock, indicating it might be a depot rework.

Regards,
Doug

Found the double crowns

reciever and mount has the dowel pins

value is about 1500.00
I have bought and sold 3 of them in the last year. The coin was added, there should be an armourer disc on there, that documents condition.

Sorry to attempt to high Jack a thread, I've recently acquired one in a trade in 6.5 x 55 Sweede. I know nothing on these rifles but I do like the caliber and I got into it for next to nothing. My thought was to sporterize it under the thought it was worth nothing. Is there someone here more informed and generous enough to pm me an email I can send pictures to and verify it's authenticity or lack there of.

Keep your powder dry,
Kid
