My dad would have turned 69 years old in the beginning of September - unfortunately he passed away when he was just 44 years old. I was really close to my old man so days like his birthday still really get to me. He was an avid hunter and introduced me to his favorite past time when I was just 5 years old. In any event, I thought that I would celebrate his birthday by heading out for an evening hunt by myself, well Ruby could tag along too, so that I would have some quiet time in the field going over the many wonderful memories made over the years we hunted together.

Light was fading fast and I was only barely able to make out what I thought was movement in the brush line. Fortunately I have excellent binoculars and I was instantly able to make out a buck as he approached the fence line. I watched him effortlessly hop over the fence and confirmed he was a 4 point (rules say minimum 4 points on one side). I brought the rifle up to my shoulder - again thankful for top quality glass - and made the shot. There was a very satisfying thump as the bullet connected and he dropped where he stood.

I had always thought that my dad would "herd" them in my direction from up above, and it sure seemed to work out that way on this birthday hunt.

The deer is an absolute pig - fat like I've never seen before. A solid +350lb live weight for sure. For reference I'm 6' and 220 lbs and the dog is 75lbs and we were both right up against the deer. A deer of a lifetime, for me anyways, especially given the circumstances.

That's a cranker! Well done to you and your whole crew, past and present! Your Ruby almost looks like a chihuahua in the second pic, the buck's so big.

Great story and a very nice buck! :)

We have shot a fair number of those 300+ pound mulies and the "width" of them always amazes me.

Yeah 'Boo, this one was one of those brutes that just takes your breath away. I shot another buck this year and while it is a decent sized 3 year old, it looked like it had dwarfism or something after this one.
