This is my present project (stage 1 of 2). Originally a P14 in full military stock.

This rifle is still in 303 British. The Barrel will be replaced at a later date with a match grade, heavy sporter taper.

Hope you like the pictures.

Mr. Hunter, you take awesome pictures and Thanks for sharing.
I'd like to know what you are using for a camera because the detail is very impressive.
My late Brother built and stocked a BSA P14 in 404 Jeffery for my 60th nearly 10 years ago and I'll be darned if I can take a decent picture of it, try as I might.
If you were closer I'd send it to you simply to get a decent picture.

Again, Thanks.

Thankyou for the photography compliments! I simply have allot of good lighting in my room that is well distributed around the room to minimise shadows.

The camera is just my Iphone 6+
The cameras on these phones are really advancing in image quality!

Thankyou "kilo Charlie"!

I just got the rifle finished up to this point the other day. And I have had no chance to shoot it witht he optics on it yet! I cant friggin wait to try it! The original bore is in about 85-90% condition. With the original sights I could occasionall shoot a group or two around an inch to 1-1/4". But the average is about 1-1/2" or less with the peeps.

My eyes are not as good as they were just a few years ago, and I know my best shooting is going to require optics.

It will be another two weeks before I may have a chance to try the old girl out with the optics!

As for why the barrel swap, I just want to have the rifle in a caliber for lots of cheaper shooting with cast bullets and some jacketed stuff. I will proably wind up with a 30-303British in the end.
But I will first try the 30-30 Winchester for kicks. I have so many components for the 30-30, I might as well use some of it up having fun with this rifle.

.303 British is already .30-303... :) .311" vs .308" bore, .303 and .30-06 respectively. You can absolutely shoot .308" bullets in it as is, and likely will be caught off guard to find they shoot just swell. For cast, there is utterly and completely no reason to change barrels to .308", just lubrisize for .312" and away you go. If gas checked won't even matter if they're .309", the checks will bump up under pressure to bore size.

That was a long winded way of saying you already have what you're after. .308" bore .303 is a risky thing as it will still chamber a standard .303, but pressures would be much higher due to forcing a .311" bullet down a .308" hole. .303 is already about as good as it gets for a cast bullet small bore with a ~200gr bullet, keep it as is and spend the barrel money on your casting supplies.

Ardent:

You seem to assume that I havent already shot cast from my rifle.

I have tried .312" cast from it and they shoot alright. But the 314299's I shoot perform much better on the target.

My First Day Out With The Updated P14.

I mounted my 6.5x20X40mm VXIII To Start load development.

Here is a few targets I Fired today. Its -15 to 20, and frigidly humid feeling today?! But That didn’t stop me from Flinging a few bullets down range!

This target is with a 46.0 grain charge of a bulk powder W760 ( a very slow lot of W760) and a Hornady 174 grain Interlock bullet. I never Chronyed the loads today, as I had forgot my Chronograph at home!

This is another charge of the bulk W760. The rifle seems to like this charge weight so far. I need to shoot a few more 5 shot groups to confirm this loads potential.

The rifle is showing some promise. Lots more shooting to do for load consistency confirmation!

Had a decent day out shooting the P14 today! I pulled one round to the left on my second group, but I may have found my hunting load. This load is a little slow in velocity, but I don't think there will be any issues with that.

This target is a load that has all the same components as the one above, just 1 grain higher in charge weight.
This load didn't cluster as tight as the one above (still 5 shots), but still did better than I expected this old rifle to do.

Overall, I look forward to retry these loads to confirm their performance at longer distances (200-300 yards) to see if they stay tight on target.
