Any way to idenitfy AR15 BCGs (FA) that have no forge mark?

Have a spare one lying & lost track of the bits & pieces. Might be a used Colt Canada, Colt USA or even a lowly DPMS.

Is there a way to definitely determine the make of a FA BCG?

Thanks!

It's all in the "tail" of the carrier, like in this pic. A complete "tail" is meant to trip the sear; a shortened one can never be used in FA. Bear in mind though, that it's all in the trigger mechanism, not the BCG, that makes a rifle FA or SA

Oooops. Sorry OP. I misread the question.

Sorry for the hijack. To answer your question, LMT has a slightly machined lugs on different bolt face IIRC, towards the rear. Never heard of the staking being an identifying factor

I bought an LMT F/A BCG from One Shot Tactical and was surprised that there were no markings. I will look into the different machining as you have mentioned so I can see for myself.

This thread will be a dogs breakfast.

The bigger questions should be how are bolts marked? I bought a DD bolt from wolverine. It came from them with zero marks on the bolt. If I didn't trust wolverine as a stand up business to deal with, it uwould be easy to think I go jipped. The bolt is the business end the carrier is just along for the ride. So unless you're looking for a coated carrier who cares?

All Colt bolts are marked MPC. ALL Colt Canada bolts are marked MPCC or MPD (Diemaco). FNMI Bolts are marked MPF. Marking is required by MILSPEC. Early Colt chrome bolts were marked simply MP and some were engraved with electric pencil as opposed to stamp. Current issue CC are laser engraved.

From 95-2001 Colt marked MPC and a date code on bolts.

Diemaco and CC bolts all have a batch number stamped or engraved below the proof marks with a letter and 4-5 digits. This helps track processes such as heat treating and stress relief that are often skipped by commercial copies.

FN underlined one letter (M or F) for subcontracted bolts. Also rare but can be found are MPN national aerospace or MPR Rock Island Arsenal subcontract spares.

Colt, FN and Diemaco also used to mark every extractor on the inside surface with C, F or a stylized D. This requirement has been completely dropped AFAIK.

Colt bolts typically have a diagonal slash tool mark at the rear left of the lugs for the chamfer. Diemaco typically has a smaller half circle took mark at the same location. FN will have similar tool marks to CC. Commercial bolts have many odd tool marks but I'm not aware or any comprehensive listing.

Colt Canada carriers are marked with CC or a stylized D (Diemaco) on the left side. Colt carriers are marked with a C on the left side - but occasionally use subcontracts with various markings (J, CJ, M). CC gas keys are staked diagonally and Colt's are staked straight across. No counter staking is used since early Vietnam era chrome bolts.

Colt standard (FA) carriers are rare but available. CC or D standard carriers are not available commercially at this time nor have they ever been.

Unmarked bolts/carriers are commercial grade.

Are you able to speak on something I've come to understand, that CC and distributor are working towards commercial bolts in 2016? Or can you not speak on that?
