Military pistol designed to work in grueling Afghanistan terrain now available to U.S. civilians

Beretta’s upgraded pistol, which was designed to be used by U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, is now available to the public.

The sand-colored 9mm semiautomatic, which can hold 17 bullets rather than the standard 15, is available to civilian buyers for just over $1,000.

The M9A3 was specially made for soldiers serving in grueling desert climates and is sand-resistant, to make it less likely to jam in dusty climates.

Upgrades from the former M9 model include a threaded muzzle with a protector, new thinner wrap-around grips and sides that are dovetailed in front and behind.

There are also some small internal changes that the gunmaker claims will reduce the cost.

The pistol has an extra-large grip that can be clipped over the handle to accommodate large hands.

The Department of Defense has yet to decide whether to switch to Beretta’s upgraded gun or reject the Italian company in favor of one of its competitors, according to Ubergizmo.

The Army has put out a request for a new pistol, asking gun companies to submit their designs by January 28.

It has specifically requested a pistol that can fire hollow point bullets, and that can use silencers.

Hollow-point bullets expand when they enter the body, in order to disrupt more tissue as it travels.

But while the DoD might not be particularly interested in the M9A3, civilians definitely are.

‘Drooling over the new Beretta M9A3,’ wrote one user on Twitter.

Another added: ‘Oooo baby that is so fine #m9a3.’

Beretta has been the U.S. military’s official supplier of sidearms since 1985, and has been a military gunmaker since 1526, when it supplied cannon barrels to the arsenal of Venice.

It is currently contracted to deliver up to 100,000 M9 pistols until 2017.

Although some early guns came from Beretta’s plant in Italy, the vast majority of M9s have come out of Beretta’s Accokeek manufacturing plant in Maryland.

All the company’s manufacturing operations, however, are being moved to a new facility in Gallatin, Tennessee.

I wish I could afford it!

Any handgun that utilizes safety controls on the slide will inherently suck ass to use for anything more than a hobby gun to plink with. I lost count how many times the only guy running an M9 decocked and safed his weapon in the course I just finished over two days. Want to try something even worse, get a Jericho...

For that price, they could have bought Glock 17's and a few spare mags too
No de-cocking nonsense, or external safety to #### around with while wearing gloves or having short thumbs

Ahhhh, the Italian pedigree....
Oh that's not right, it is under licence for Tennesse .
Good enough for the Military should be good enough for us mere citizens.
I would prefer a S&W or a CZ or a Sig Sauer ....
Best Regards,
Rob

Kinda late now isn't it?
Late now for what? The Beretta 92 / M9 is a proven design. If you mean late for the American military, well only they know. They were still ordering new M9's right up to this year before they stated it is a piece of #### and doesn't meet their requirements anymore and needs to be replaced. Strangely enough the American military never asked Beretta to improve their design before complaining about it and dumping it.

The M9A3 was a attempt for Beretta to refurbish all M9 service pistols to this variant to meet the needs of military and to try and keep their contract. The M9A3 would be a cheaper cost to the military then replacing all pistols. As per usual, military procurement is a total fukc up no what what country you go to.

As for the M9A3. They just went on sale in the States. The first dealer here that brings them in, gets my money. I would happily take any M9 or 92 as a duty pistol. Although I do prefer the decocker only on the slide as opposed to the decocker and safety.

How are the above comments wrong? External safeties and DA/SA guns are old news. Beretta has a long history of poor performance, seeing as you used to be sponsored by them and had multiple pistols fail due to cracked frames, I would think your opinion would be similar?
