pictures of SKS bayo mount / cleaning rod retainer ground off ?

I removed the lug on a Chinese Type 56 SKS. Worked out well and I reblued the cut portion. This one shoots 1 1/4" groups at 100yds even with the bayo lug removed.

Now that's exactly what I wanted to see.

Kinda hard to tell from the pics but I was curious how far you could take it down without compromising the pin because seems like you can't take it right down so it's round or you'll hit it. Was wondering if that would look weird.

This looks great however. Thanks for posting ljones

I understand, respect and appreciate your comments here but an sks TO ME is a really excellent weapon for the money. IMO opinion it looses it's fantastic value for what you are getting very quickly when you go full bubba with it. The add ons add up very quickly which IMO takes you right into the "might as well buy an 858" territory.

Short of the quick change mag option all the upgrades seem to be for improved weapons manipulation, some of it accomplishes this, some not so sure.

All that aside I've never been a purist nor have I've ever been interested in the collectable angle. When it comes to an SKS I'm interested in little mods that improve the rifle without spending a lot on it.

Mods to date:

- thin target front Tech Sight
- TS200 aluminum rear sight (might swap out to the steel version)
- trigger job
- remove bayo / cleaning rod
- tried Murray's excellent spring loaded firing pin but it's really only necessary for commercial loads (replaced with original) and experiences FTF's with surplus
- removed rear sling attachment
- flush cup installed on right side of stock near rear (for patrol carry)
- Blue Force Gear VCAS Standard AK sling

Only other things I want to do to it:
- remove bayo/cleaning rod mount (partially for ascetics, partially so its one less thing to get snagged on branches, partially to remove any unnecessary ounce)
- possibly come up with some kind of latch (like the original) for removing the TS200 for cleaning

About as bubba as I'd go with it would be the BC tactical mount and some kind of red dot & a cheek riser but don't imagine I'm going to do this. Saving that for the 858.

That TO ME is a practically improved SKS that still has "value" (I don't mean RETAINING value) because I didn't spend an extra $1000 on a mag well setup, the threaded front sight assembly, "tactical" stock, mags... etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong... I love all that bubba stuff. But if I'm going to go that route I'd rather do it to an AR or 858.

Not a lecture or anything, just detailing what a great usable SKS is to me. I choose the Izzy's (have two actually) because it is the best example of an SKS to me.

You make many good points here, please excuse my negative comments. I also will be altering one of my best SKS to the degree that you already have.

No Sir, didn't take it as negative at all. I really do accept that everyone has what they consider to be THEIR ideal version of an SKS. Just detailed what mine is.

I really like all the different opinions guys have on the SKS. I love them from the bone stock versions to (most) of the bubba stuff. There's the odd one that makes me scratch my head .... but for the most part I like how guys push the limits or take it as is.

I DO see some great weapons manipulation improvements but sadly see very little in the accuracy improvement dept. Everyone seems to be looking for that !

removed the bbl and all the hardware, removed the rear portion of the sight/bayo lug by an inch and a bit, then nipped off about and inch of the bbl to get rid of a worn crown. custom side plate and weaver s2 rail. have a few other custom things i did to the rifle, its pillar beded and free floated with an ancor point 4 inches from breach and one at the rear of the reciver. shoots as good as a bolt gun with the piston removed but am working at tuning the gas system to be less violent so hopefully its better in semi auto mode. Would realy like the ar15 mag well adapter but my mill/dril is in storrage still.

Interesting! If I were to remove the gas piston from my SKS, I could expect an accuracy gain? Just use it like a bolt action?
Not that I need the SKS to be more accurate, it is just that I want to be able to fully understand the capabilities of the SKS.

yeah the group is about 2 or 3" lower than semi auto, the other bullets are 2 groups from a bull bbl 10/22 at the same range. this is with s&b brass cased soft points. now if I could just have a crispy trigger on the thing. the trigger is managable on the bench but in feild shots on game animals is an unwelcome chalenge. this is where my 858 was way better.
