Garand turned into a bm59 clone. Almost

D-day landings? special forces? um no. Dont make people dumber by posting false history. The Garand was used during d-day in its normal configuration only.

If there is someone dumb enough on CGN to believe this tongue in cheek comment, please contact me as I have Hitler's personalized Ross Sporter for sale. It is well known that while serving in World War One as a cook, the young Adolph got lost while delivering bratwurst to the forward German positions and stumbled into the Canadian trench lines. On seeing the German they all leapt into action, but none could work the bolt on their Ross's to chamber a round to capture him. Except for the NCO in charge, Sgt Mike Camrose who was armed with the then experimental Sten. Startled by the German he dropped the Sten, and as everyone knows it will empty the full mag when dropped. One round hit young Adolph in the leg, the other brought down the Red Baron's Fokker Tri-plane that was passing overhead. Feeling sorry for the young German, they bandaged him up, had a splendid feed of Bratwurst and a good chuckle at their chance meeting, then the Canadians went back to burning the Ross stocks to keep warm and Hitler bid adieu. From that moment on, Adolph had a soft spot for the Ross. In 1936, then Prime Minister, P.W. Herman, delivered a presentation Ross to the new German leader. Remembering that it was useless as a rifle, he used it as a paddle to chase Eva around the bedroom. On his escape to Argentina by submarine in 1945 the rifle's stock and barrel had to be cut down to still be usable in the cramped bed chambers of the sub. When he died in Paraguay in 1978 the rifle passed to his son, who sold it to me. Regrettably I wil have to sell it for a mere $ 78,0000.00 as I am trying to raise money to complete my D-Day Special Forces Tanker Garand. I want to buy a EOtech XPS2-0 which was fitted to only a few of the select Tanker's that were airdropped to the French Resistance..............these versions are extremely rare as they were chambered in 5.56 mm and most were destroyed when the owners tried to use them with 223 Remington.

Would you have a spare Reese follower rod by chance? I'm in the process of modifying an original Garand follower rod for similar duty by filing and welding as its the last piece needed for my frankenbuild.

Only other differences with mine are that I'm not going to use the shortened front guard and swapped the Garand gas cylinder for BM59 w/ bi-pod (required straightening of op rod). The BM59 flash hider works well in hiding the bit of extra barrel meat that puts mine out of restricted status from most tankers (18.25 inches).

Is the front pistol grip actually attached to the stock, or just a spare for the original plastic one at the back?

Cheers,
R

I've shown this pic before and the parts are still sitting in the basement, courtesy of Reese's Surplus 20 years ago. Some day I will build this little monstrosity.

7.62, short barreled, folding stock "Tanker" garand.....just like the ones used by Special Forces on the D-Day landings........

Is there 2 kinds of bm59 gas cylinders then?. One with bipod and one without?. I'd be looking for the one with bipod as I have that part. Getting rid of the front wood is an interesting option I hadn't considered. I also have a t37 flash hider that I could use but I think I'd go with the bm59 flash hider. Now to find a pipe straightener for the oprod /jk

Damn, this made me laugh!!

I mean, HITLER'S ROSS!? I'll start the bidding at $80,000! ;)

One version has a machined bit on the lower part for the bipod to index on while the other does not. Noting that the gas cylinder and corresponding lock are further apart between barrel and op rod (hence the no bend required).

Snagged a bm59 gas cyl, plug, grenade sight, and bipod as an assembly all for $200 shipped on eBay. Not bad considering what these pieces go for separately. The guys already selling others for more than I paid. All I really need is a tricompensator and that modified trigger housing.

I have bm59 stocks, 2 barrels and 2 op rods. when you put them in the stock it all fits. you could also look at the Italian shortened SA Garand barrels with short op rod and stock as another choice. The bm59 barrels are shorter than the Italian 308 garand barrels.

I'm actually building the short 7.62 garand as well. Just waiting for the barrel to arrive and then Ill have all the parts for that. I was thinking of making my own barrel and oprod for the bm59 but I don't have the dimensions. If I can find those pieces it would be easier. Any leads on a bm59 barrel?

Necropost, I know but why for love of Pete does this thread not have any pics???

While a repro would be nice I'd actually be much happier with a en bloc .308 Garand with 18.5" BM59 style barrel and drop down gas cylinder. Kind of like a "tanker" Garand but it would work LOL! Given our gun laws it would make an ideal legal shtf rifle.

Any sources for BM59 parts?

Great timing Leg. I have a BM59 muzzlebrake/grenade launcher ordered from Reese Surplus back in the day.

I am not using it because this thing has metric thread form IIRC.

I am going into camp tomorrow (two weeks), but if you are interested I'll keep you in mind first off.

My parts came from either e-bay, Standard parts llc or google searches looking for Italian milsurp stores.

My receiver was mostly milled for all the BM parts, but the legs were not done to the BM profile.

So I eyeballed some measurements, and drug out the ye olde dremel.

Got to digging around my parts collection and dusted off this project. Now that I've finished a few other projects this year I can look at this again. I have the trigger assembly now, just need the tricompensator. Any leads?. Fixed the pictures on the original post, no idea what photo bucket did to them.

No BM 59 is complete without one of these :d

All kidding aside, can anyone shine some light on whether these are legitimate stamps for a BM 59?
They uncovered themselves after bead blasting for Parkerizing.

Google search has revealed this is a legit BM 59 bolt.

Beretta rebuilt US and Italian m1 grand bolts for use in BM59 rifles. They marked them as they built BM59 rifles

I recently got a Beretta BM59 stock which has been re-worked for the Tipo 2 Garand configuration. The most obvious change is a wooden filler glued in ahead of the mag well area to close off where the BM59 box mag fits. Mr Peridol or Daryl, I'm curious about the length of the barrel in your pic from the breech end to the ridge where the lower band seats.

Interesting how history repeats itself.

The Germans adopted the Kar 98AZ, with a 24 inch barrel as the 7.92 S cartridge produced an unacceptable muzzle flash and noise with the original short barreled Kar 98.

Even the FN C1 with its 21" barrel had a a, " flash eliminator of the slotted tube type ". (If I rmember right )
