Well I have had 4 SKSs over the years, sold them and then just bought another which is the nicest by far and being refurbished for 200 bucks was a no brainer. Stock was great, bluing nice, and the rifling was also crisp.
Also had a couple of M1 Carbines, 3 M305/M14 Norcs, and always come back to the SKS.
Stripped this one and did the Tung Oil refinish thing, just need to get out and shoot her.

SKS is one of the best rifle buys in Canada...... IF........ you don't modify the hell out of it.
Once you start spending lots of money on after market this and after market that it very quickly looses it's "great buy'. If you want it to remain a great buy leave it essentially stock.
To be clear that is not a knock on bubba'd SKS's.

They are having an SKS love in! I showed up because I saw the thread title and I thought I would come and defend the SKS
from what I think of as the M14-M305 crowd, who I was expecting to be bashing the SKS. Instead it is a LOVE IN!

Nah, battle rifles rifle full size cartridges.
The 7.62x39mm is an intermediate cartridge.
This IMHO this is correct but it is still a battle rifle just not a main battle rifle. I did hear a phrase that would better describe its position in the grand scope of military firearms. Intermediate rifle? Urban warfare rifle? Close contact rifle? Perhaps combat carbine?
But the thread has shown that there is a loving place for the sks that is void due to the absence of our our beloved FN C1A1. Kind of like a place card holder until, by some magic, the FAL can be decriminalized even though most of the Canadian icon rifles have been turned into tire rims.
The next question is...Is the OP now going to go out and join the club and get an SKS? That is now what we need need to know.
It's a no brainer really. Rifle - cheap. ammo - cheap. Shooting - enjoyment - priceless.

Nope, SKS have the red rifle section. This place is for M14s, FNFAL, G3s, 308 and larger guns.
