I bought a new Chinese M14. So far I am not impressed. Help is appreciated. These are my issues:
1 While dismantling it I was unable to remove the bolt. Watching a video of the process being performed the bolt should just pull away when it is in the correct position. I can't find this position. I will keep trying.
2. Casings will get caught in the chamber during extraction cycle. Happens about once every 20 rounds fired.
3. Firing pin does not hit primer hard enough, leaves a dent but does not fire. Recharging the bolt action usually works.
4. The gun did a double tap once with full auto on two rounds, the last round had a dent in the primer so it was going for 3 rounds on full auto.
5. Removing and inserting the 5 round magazine is a #####.

I am guessing my issues with 2 and 3 is directly related to issue 1. Could there be packing grease causing my recycle issues?

You want my advice...... If it's new from a store, you might wanna skip the trying to fix and just go for a straight up exchange or refund.
With those issues, sounds like a lemon right off the hop.

Needs a thorough cleaning, followed by proper lubrication, and some break in shooting.

Can't get the bolt out? Some how it got installed?
They are tricky to remove and install. Sort of a bite your tonged and purse your lips just right arrangement. Once figured out you're golden.

I agree with gnmontey. Sounds like a cleaning and lube issue. Once you get the bolt out, blast the firing pin with Brake Kleen (be sure to perform a proper safety squint) and degrease everything else while you're at it. Then, apply GREASE to anywhere that remotely looks like another thing rubs it (except the gas piston and bolt face, those stay DRY). Also take a thumb full of grease and mash as much as you can in to the bolt roller. It will take a lot of mashing to get grease all the way in

I believe the dismount notch is right at the end of the right rail- you might be best advised to follow 45's advice- after all he has built more than 1- , but also consult on how to remove the bolt from an m1a- not the m14- they also have the notch at the rear of the rail- you've got crap on your firing pin- that's why its not hitting hard enough - again a cleaning issue-and the 5 round magazine needs to be rePlaced IMMEDIATELY by a 20/5- I have 4 -5 round springfields ( they called them parade mags back in the day ) and they all are a pain in tail to eject and insert-these are meant for doing drill so you don't catch your hand on the mag when doing the slide- they copied that from the garand- the fact that it holds 5 rounds is a happy coincidence- and lee valley tools sells a syringe pre loaded with the grease needed to do the bolt roller

Did you do a full disassembly and clean after you bought it? Is it properly lubricated?

I figured my issues were related to the inability to properly strip the gun. I blasted the firing pin with aerosol oil spray but clearly it was not enough to free it up. A proper dis assembly is required. I will keep working on finding the sweet spot to remove the bolt.

I will certainly look for another magazine. Right now it is easier to push rounds in from the top than trying to take that thing out and back in. Thanks for the help guys, it is very much appreciated.

Try brake clean. Over a garbage can.... Let drip dry....

You need to be able to remove the bolt to do a proper lube job on the bolt roller.... If it went in, it should come out! As one poster said, "you need to use the right amount of tongue on it"!

The doubling is likely caused by either a stuck firing pin or an out of spec "trigger group to receiver" relationship.

The 5rnd mags are "poo", very hard to get in and out. The 20/5 mags are easier as the rocking motion involved is helped with a larger Lever.

This may help, Shout out to TonyBen!

The reason people are saying it needs cleaning is because these firearms were (some) stored in Hong-oreen (Chinese Cosmoline). The Russian SKSs can experience this Slamfire and the light strikes you describe.
The M14 doesn't have a spring loaded firing pin ..I guess that's irrelevant here though... the gunk is inside the firing pin "tunnel" and si isn't letting your firing pin move freely. In FACT, it sounds like it's stuck a little proud so that when the bolt slams shut, the firing pin is still "sticking-out" and being held there enough to strike the next primer.
It's the unintended fully-automatic mod.

You have to get that gunk OUT of there. Not add more oil or anything.

When removing the bolt, the "flange" (I don't know what else to call it) at the end of the firing pin, at the end of the bolt, needs to be able to fit through a notch in the safety bridge as the bolt is moved forward, up and rotated out of the receiver.

The other thing you may want to check is to see if the bolt is fully rotating into full battery when closing on a round.
DO NOT place a live round in the chamber at home, however.

If cleaning it doesn't fix it, I'd do what 45ACPKING said and just exchange it from the vendor you purchased it from.

After watching another Youtube demonstration of how to remove the bolt I got it. I greased as directed in the video, however I am still concerned about the firing pin. I will pick up a can of Brake Kleen to clean out the firing pin properly. I really want to see this gun work so I don't want to return it.

Brake cleaner is your friend for that bolt. Now can you find some Lithium Grease (small tube at Canadian Tire) near you? Gotta grease up them bolt lugs, bolt raceways, op rod track, op rod guide , and op rod shaft (that sounds weird.....) :)

Yes, there is a touch to removing that bolt. Youtube is great but (BIG BUT) it's the "touch" and "feel" you need to learn to get that bolt out. That firing pin tang (that's what it's called) has to clear the receiver BRIDGE (it's designed to prevent out of battery firing due to the floating firing pin design). So once you practice this a few times while watching Forrest Gump or Born on the Fourth of July or Full Metal Jacket or playing Fallout 4 on your PS6 console, then you will remove the mystery....

And I for one wanna see you work this platform like crazy because the M14 addiction sure is fun!

There is sooooo much help here on this forum! :dancingbanana:

Cheers,

Have you disassembled the bolt? If yes okydoky. If not, do it. It makes cleaning a breeze.

Does the bolt fully seat on an empty cartridge or a snap cap?
