Hi folks,
For a couple reasons (space in safe, possible trading of optics, etc), I've switched all my minor calibre optics to quick-detach rings. Now I'm looking at the heavier kickers.
In a normal scope ring, the pressure to hold the ring still is exerted by the screws - torque them down, and the ring doesn't move. However in a QD situation, you normally cannot put enough force into holding the rings stable. When you flip over certain rings, you see the bottom of the bolt that crosses underneath. On a rifle with a bit of kick, that rounded profile of the bolt can chew up a scope rail as it is almost impossible to avoid some slip:
(UTG shown for demonstration purposes... but these are great on my .22s)
Good hardware, like the Burris PEPR mount, have a solid square key that locks into the picatinny rail - the optic won't go anywhere, so the QD levers are just to snug up the mount, to prevent wiggle.
So aside from the PEPR mount, it looks like the Leupold QRW may have a square key as well:
(QRWs look like this, but with the lever, of course)
But there's something about the look of those... maybe I'm too used to aluminum rings (that have to be thicker)... Is anyone running these rings, and are they alright?
Burris Zee rings have a Quick-detach version, which has a small piece of square key:
(I like that these are not cam-lock levers, you can put force into these... but again, it doesn't matter, if the rings aren't going to slip)
So what I'm looking for are rings that have a throw lever, that don't cost more than the scope they're on (which isn't much, sometimes). I know - you have to pay to play... but I gotta start somewhere. I'll likely grab the Leupolds - but does anyone know of any others?
