I just received a new Model 7 and find that the bolt is not very smooth but more annoyingly it makes a squeak when closing the bolt. I polished up the raceways, the bolt body a bit, the edges of the lugs and I took apart the bot, polishing up the groove that moves the firing pin. Action is much smoother but the squeak is still there! It's got a thin layer of oil, but as I mention closing the bolt (rotating) makes it squeak. It only squeaks on closing, not on opening. Any ideas?

Greased the threads and that didn't help. I can't see any marks on the bolt anywhere - nor on the bottom lug. I loosened the front action bolt anyways and the squeak is still there. It is a loud squeak too, not just a "did you hear that?" kind of squeak.

Is it safe to grease the bolt lugs? I seem to recall that greasing them can lead to increased chamber pressure.

These folks are telling it to you true. greasing the rear of the lugs is a good idea for many reasons including making opening/closing the action smoother. I agree that the squeak is coming from the rear end of the bolt where the threads that hold the shroud assembly are located. I had a similar problem with a 700 short action bolt. A bit of grease in there (not a lot) is also a good idea.

Well I've greased the threads, greased the lugs and still a squeak. The faster I close the bolt the louder it squeaks. Putting rearward pressure on the bolt as I close it makes the squeak louder. Putting forward pressure on it as I close it makes it quieter. I suspect it may be the lugs, but the grease hasn't quieted the thing down.

With careful observation it feels/seems as though the squeak is at the moment the lugs are engaging. Once past that point the bolt can move up and down without causing a squeak.

Have you dismantled the bolt and lubed the firing pin/mainspring? They don't rotate when the bolt body does.

Yes thanks, I did that. I used G96 Gun Oil.

A sharpie might help you find a high spot??

Unfortunately the lugs and bolt body have the same finish on them - or similar - as the rest of the metal parts. I'm polishing it up more though and then your idea may help.

Just try a little grease around the rear of the bolt body where it contacts the receiver... if the squeak stops wipe the bolt off and see what happens. The bolt lugs should be greased and the shroud threads greased and the cocking cam... G96 on the firing pin spring.

I use Imperial sizing die wax most of the time, but anything short of spit will work.

^^ This!

Some rifles will gall badly if isn't lubricated with almost anything, same metals and same hardness make galling worse.

Are there scope bases installed?

Yes and no. Yes they are now - Talley 1 piece - but they weren't before and the squeaking is the same.

I have some imperial sizing wax. I'll wipe everything down and try it.

I'll try the rear of the bolt body. You may be seeing this rifle soon Dennis!
