its been a long year trying to put one of these guys in the freezer. We have hunted high and low but just coudnt find the elk
Last Saturday was going to be the last time i would be able to get out elk hunting.A friend and my self left home at 5:30 am .We arrived at our spot parked the car ( Ford Fusion) checked the the time ,it said 7:10.
We put on our packs and headed down the cut line towards a small clearing that i want to sit and glass for most of the morning. Its a short walk to the clearing 10 minutes tops,as we are walking day light is coming fast 7:20 was legal shooting ,the wind was howling ,its raining with some sleet ,Im thinking to myself that with the way the weather is the animals will be bedded in the timber and not moving, looks like i will be eating my elk tag again for another year ,but hay its been a good year, i have been out a lot ,shot a few critters with the bow and one rifle.
We reach the small clearing and head right into it looking ahead ,about 10 yards in 3 elk take off running in front of me,im turning to the right tell my friend elk when out of the corner of my eye i see a fouth and its got "HORNS" i swing on the bull and he stop 25 yards out and looks back at me ,boom i fired . I didnt here the hit , my friend is standing on higher ground then me and says you got him.
We walk the short distance and this is what we saw, one 160 grain Speer form the 7mm mag threw the heart.
We had him quartered and in the trunk in 1 hr 3 trips 2 with the meat and 1 with the head and hide.
\we were back home 10:30 with enough of the day left to do the Saturday chores.
I dont know what i did to deserve a easy elk like that but i will take it and say Thank-you
Well its been a week hanging in the cooler at the right temputure, i had some of the inner loin cooked in a crock pot yesterday,he dosent look that old, his teeth were in great shape ,and he appeared to be in great shape ,but Man is he "TOUGH" LOL
Sorry for the blood in the picture.

I wanna hunt elk so so soooooooo bad! I wish there was an emoji that i could use to convey how jealous i am! Nice bull m8 and congrats!

Ground elk is never tough. I had to grind one up to eat it. Even a day in the slow cooker would not make tenderloin tender.
