If you only had $1000 to buy a gun for the rest of your life what would it be. This has to be full package with scope. For hunting purposes will mostly be used for deer. I own a rem 760 30-06. It's a pump and decent firearm just not a real shooter. So if that was the only other gun you own what calibre would you recommend ? I was thinking .308 However as of now rifle season is only 2 weeks long so I want it to have the following qualities to enjoy all year round.

-very accurate , moa guarantees are something that sways my mind a lot. I want to be able to show off at 100yds with close sub moa groups.
-want to be able to learn and practice shooting far distances, 500 yds decent groups. Maybe more. This means adjustable scope?
-want it to be a lifetime firearm, for this reason I am thinking a wood stock holds that tradition more. But am open to synthetic still.

Open to all opinions and discussion. Hoping to make the buy within the next month, but no rush.

a 6.5x55 sporterized swedish mauser and a leupold .......a reliable, accurate combo ......hard to beat combo for the $

Man, that's a "LOADED" question. There are sooo many options. I'd try to pick up something used as far as the gun goes and spend the money on the scope and reloading ammo for ultimate accuracy. You can always touch up the uglies and upgrade the stock after. But that's just me

A grand is a bit low for a hunting rifle package now with the Canadian dollar so low, especially a "lifetime" package. You can do it but I would say something will be a bit sub par.

Realistically now for the average brand new package you are looking closer to $1200 before tax and above unless you go used.

If $1000 is your budget I would suggest spending the money in the rifle and buying a scope to get by for now with plans of upgrading it in the future. The rifle will hold the value and besides glass keeps getting better whereas it is tough to get better than what we have currently in rifles. Have you looked through a vintage scope lately and compared it to a bottom line brand new Redfield Revolution, Leupold VX 1, Zeiss Terra... Light years ahead.

With wanting a 500 yard rifle or sub MOA you want a bolt.

Of course the best rifles currently (this list is regurgitated daily on this forum):
Winchester Model 70 FWT
Weatherby S2
Tikka T3 Hunter
