anybody reload for a 250 savage?

I have extensive data /experience with the .250 in a Savage 99 and Rem 700 Classic. Win 760 is the best with IMR 4895 and IMR 3031 second and third respectively. It's effective to 300 yards with 100gr Partitions on AB WT's In older Savage 1920/ 99's with the 1-14" twist 87-90 bullets are best but will shoot the CIL 100gr RN if you can find them? I FL size 22-250 brass...... Harold

that's the kind of info I was looking for, thank you mbogo3, my 99 was made in the 70's, any idea what the rate of twist would be?

IIRC all type 99s factory chambered in 250 Savage have 1-14 twist rates. It's easy to measure yourself. Put a tight patch on a cleaning jag, start the patch in the bore and mark the rod where you start. Make another mark back further and push the rod down the bore until it makes one complete rotation. Mark it there, pull the rod back and measure the distance between the two marks.

The GMX bullets in the weight you mention is just short enough to be stabilized in a 1-14 twist. Personally I would go with the W760 or with its equivalent H414. Ball powders seem to be perfect for that case.

All Savage 99's are not 1-14".Many are all over from 1-11" / 1-12" according to some gunsmiths I've talked to. The 99A is factory 1-10" which is what Newton wanted originally for a 100 gr bullet.Savage wanted 3000fps so they backed off to an 87gr bullet for advertising hype.I've shot many deer with the 87gr Hornady just stay away from direct shoulder shots or raking shots.Speer hot-cor 87gr is another gooder. If your gun will shoot the 100gr Speer is your best bet as it has the shortest ogive and will print nose first with a 1-14" twist.A cleaning rod with a brush and a sharpie will tell you the rate of twist for your gun.32.5gr/IMR3031/87gr Hornady cut just under 1/2" 3 shot groups at 100 yards...same bullet with 34.5gr/IMR 4895 even more accurate..PM me your mailing address and Postal Code and I'll send you a copy of Ken Waters "Pet Loads" for the 250 Savage.Harold

Thanks for this. I wasn't sure but of the three in my safe made about ten years apart all have 1-14 twist rates. All three are right around the mid years of production and nothing special but they work well with this cartridge.

My go to bullets are the 87 grain Remington when I can find them or the 100 grain Speer. I have also used the Hornady GMX just to see if it would stabilize. I picked up a half box at the last gun show for this purpose and to cure the curiosity bug.

My go to load for the 87 grain Remington is 40 grains of 760 over CCI 250 magnum primers and this works very well in all three. I use 39 grains of 760 over CCI 250 for the 100 gr Speer. I also use 30 grains of 760 over CCI 250 magnum primers for the 90 gr GMX as it has longer bearing surfaces and mainly because it was the first load I tried and it worked so well I didn't bother working it up from there.

All of these loads are safe in my rifle and close to maximum. Do your own due diligence because they may be to hot for your rifles.

I won't tell you the load I use in my Rem 700 Classic with a mag primer and Win 760 as it is too hot for a Savage 99 ,but makes one hole....it has a 1-10" and likes the 100gr Sierra bullet best.......I finished a wounded AB WTB of a friends that was escaping at a little over 300 yards with it under a 100gr Partition and it was recovered in the offside hide perfectly mushroomed like the adds.I use Hornady dies as they have a more tapered expander button than RCBS and case loss is zero re-sizing 22-250 to .250-3000.......hope this was helpful....Harold

Hi - not trying to hijack but an old timer has given me a few weird brass requests he asked to see if I could poke around on the "computer" and find - one of them was for 250 Savage which led me to this thread - I'm thinking he hasn't found them himself for a reason - not so common?
Thanks
Neil
