Hello everyone, I was thinking about taking advantage of the Black Friday sale and picking up a .44 Mag revolver. I've narrowed my search to the Ruger Redhawk 5.5" or S & W 629 4.2". I've owned a S & W 29 back in the day but have no experience with the Ruger. Anybody have experience with both? Looking for some input.

I own a 629 4.2 / 29 6.5 / SBH 10.5 / Redhahk 4.2 and my favorite is the RH for the trigger and the accuracy... JP.

I love the balance of the 4" 29/629. If I was shooting mainly 44 specials and the occasional factory 44 mag or light reload, the 29/629 is great. However, I can't shoot too many factory magnums through one without getting flinchy. It hurts.

The Redhawk would be better for magnum loads and is also a very nice package.

Tough choice.

Talk to dirtybarry about his M29 experience!
I think he is on to a 629 now. Last I checked, I believe he is "still alive".
I am personally not a Ruger fan. I find Rugers bulky and the lines are not svelte.
But they are built like a tank and will serve you very well.
The Ruger is a Ford Mustang and the 629 is a Vette.

the only problem - if you can call it that-is that all single actions take so damned long to reload-I use a redhawk stainless in 5.5 inch and I would recommend it over the 4.2- less muzzle flip and better balance- and houge grips of course and please don't put the ruger in the same sentence as ford- it's closer to a 70 series dodge b class- that's right- the ones that leave six inches of rubber on the pavement and pin your ears back- remember, the smiths are built up from 44 special frames, whereas the ruger is DESIGNED for the 44 mag from the ground up- that's the reason the smiths shoot loose eventually with heavy loads

Thank you t-star I agree Dodge all the way. FORD=Found on road Dead(Just jokes and fu. But if you want full power I would recommend thinking of the 454 Casull. if the 454 was Commercial available I believe dirty harry would have shot it.

My 2 last Rugers my RH 44 mag 4.2 and my SRH Toklat 5 inch 454 Casull, have really opened my eyes on Ruger revolvers...

I love my Smiths but those Ruger are classy, great trigger and very accurate...

Lucky i can keep them all, i would hate to have to choose... JP.

S&W 4.2" 629 .44 MAGNUM FTW 100% if you just want to have fun! It can hurt the hand in an extended session. lol
